Are you talking figurehead or hood ornament?  I don't see how you could get your arms locked forward for figurehead…

    Figurehead

From hood ornament you can go into teddy fairly easily

It looks like every single competition is held at a strip club.

Let's see, I have been at it for a little over 3 years and I am one fo the "older" ladies here.  Prior to poling I did work out but my upper body strength alway was lacking.  I started at home with the S Factor book and and then the dvds.  Because of this I think I progressed faster than many but also injured myself trying to do things I should not have been doing.

    Things I remember for strength:

Caterpillar: I was able to get one out without issue but it took me at least 3 months to get several.

Caterpillar climb: This took me forever because I fell out of it and I was scared to death to try again.  I worked on handstands in the mean time to build my upper strength and confidence.  This probably took me 6 months to a year before I was comfortable.  This is the one move that also opened up a ton of other moves for me.

Reverse grab: I am still working one getting lots of air on this one.  I was able to do it fairly quicky once I was comfortable with a one handed spin but my legs were always near the ground.  Conditions still have to be "just right" for me to get my legs high.

    BTW…my flexibility is crap.

I have very little leg contact in any of my spins, but I also learned them all wearing shorts.  I think it is just like when people have death grip…you just kind of learn the proper form to make it happen.

I do not know how to post a link from itunes here but when I typed S Factor into the search bar I got about 30 hits under playlists.

I cannot find imix any more either….not sure what happened to it.  I was however able to type veruca and S Factor  into the search bar and toward the bottom left I got a list of playlists.  I have used stripper, lap dance, and pretty much any other sexy words to find music on itunes.

There is a feature called imix.  I cannot access it while I am at work or I would guide you step by step.

Here is something I found on the web:

Open the iTunes store, and click Music in the upper left.
A section appears just below the upper left, called "More in Music" and you'll see iMix in there. There's over a million of them, and you can browse through or search by different criteria.

I know that both Veruca and Amy from here have mixes.

I love bluesy type music….it just makes me want to grind.  AC/DC is good for that (check out Ride On).

Look up some old Prince music.

    Portishead-Glory Box

    MIMS-This is Why I'm Hot

    Joe Cocker-Leave Your Hat On

    !!!- There's No F-in' Roles Dude

    Juvenile-Slow Motion

    Lizz Wright- I Idolize You

    Lucinda Williams- Unsuffer Me

Marily Manson- Just a Car Crash Away

    Eagles-Those Shoes

    Ted Nugent-Stranglehold

On Itunes look up S Factor playlists.  I know there are a bunch that have been put up by students and teachers alike.

I have used Natural Calm for about 5 years now (and as a matter of fact I just recommended it last night to Luvlee).  Swanso Vitamins carries it and has a really good price, plus they always run coupons.

The product is Magnesium Citrate, which is a much more bioavailable form of magnesium.  When I have run out I will buy the liquid magnesium laxative from the drug store….same ingredient.  That is one thing you need to watch out for….if you take too much you will be in the bathroom!

BTW…this also works great for monthly cramps!!

    Here is the product brochure:

    http://petergillham.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/NaturalCalm1.pdf

And Veena, if you go to the link there is lots of info, or you can just google magnesium benefits and read all of the studies and medical literature about Mg supplementation.  It is also highly recommended for menopausal women as it helps balance the Ca/Mg ratio keeping Ca where it should be.

There are so many other competitions that peopel can get involved in.  Pretty much ANY professional sport has levels…you are not going to get automatically into one of the top competitions on your first try.  Everyone has to work their way up through the ranks….pole dancing is no different.

As far as novice competitions go, Mary Ellyn is planning to have that level in the Midwest Competition as well as an over 45 category.

Yoga…you have to understand what they consider amateur and what they consider pro.  The standings are set up exactly like bodybuilding…you cannot earn your "pro" status until you place in the amateur category.  It in no way means your ability…it is just a rating system.

Yep….pretty much what everyone else has said.  I have a little bit of balance issues when wearing heels…I am already 5'8" without them…add another 6" and I am all sorts of messed up.  Really work on pulling the knees up, then tilting the hips then extending the legs to the pole.  Pantera had us pause at the tilted hips portion and scream out a cuss word or something totally dirty before coming back to the floor.

I pretty much say forget it.  I am not trying to compete and I also realize that I am not going to push myself to try to get things to "work" (let's not even get into the fact of being older and limited flexibility).

I am unsure what an inverted venus is.  If it is a chopper (inverted V) that is one of the moves that lots of people screw up their backs and shoulders on.  This is not a beginner move and requires a LOT of back strength, especially coming out of it.

I understand the working and little time thingy but you need to make time for yourself.  If you are going to the gym how much time are you spending there?  Once a week or even dropping in once a month at the studio will do wonders.  It really is not that much of a drive if it is something that you want.  When I was going the studio was 30 minutes from my house, but I also work 40 minutes from my house, so on pole nights I drove 40 minutes to home, got myself together and then drove another 30.  If it was something for your kids would you do it?

One big thing with this move is to NOT have the bottom hand thumbs down….you will injure yourself.  The bottom hand should just be for stabilization and also pushing yourself away from the pole in the THUMBS UP position.  What helped me on this move was not to think about lifting both legs at the same time (this also helped my chair).  When you step into it just focus on lifting the leading leg, the other will follow.
