thank you so much for your advice and encouragement!
lana lee- im scared of contortion, it seems too extreme for my back at the moment but hopefully one day… good luck with your classes!
lyme lyte- i know exactly what you mean, i always feel like yeah! i'm so low today, then i look at the pic and its a sad litle bend…
hazelnut, i have to try that wall stretch, it sounds amazing!
miss veena- you are sooo bendy! i've never thought about it as lengthening my back before but that makes lots of sense! i shall try and stretch up as well as back!
its so encouraging to see that it can be taught and doesnt have to be genetic. all of my bendy friends have a genetically bendy back and i dont but that just makes any progress so much better! can't wait to try these tips out in my next stretch sesh!

I found when your sitting in a straddle, lift your arms straight up next to your ears and stretch up trying to lengthen your back. Then, fold over at the hips, keeping your back straight. Even if u can only go forwards a little bit, hold it there and gradually you’ll get lower!

-
bbyblue- do you puch your hips up before reaching for the pole or after your hands are already on the pole coz i cant get my hands on.
-
The better the knee grip the less ouchie it is! Yay for remi sit, next remi layback, finally remi bridge!
-
oh! that's a great idea. will try that next practice. the whole moves feels a lot more lopsided than a regular bridge.
-
I think they are all variations on the same thing?
you have your arms one high and one low and your body is in between the arms BUT your legs are different. i think the top leg can either be free so you can fold out into a back hook (so that would be cradle or thigh rest/ apprentice or it can be inbetween your top arm and your body (what i've seen called side v here) and from this move you go into a superman.
eg. gemini–> SIDE V–> superman –> dove –> dove drop!
eg. cradle–> extend legs to thigh rest/ cradle v –> hook top ankle and push up into butterfly –>extended butterfly —> iron x 😛

Hmm, maybe i should start a totally new topic for all the pokemon moves.
the easy moves that turn into killers lol
-
lillybilly- how do you go from gemini to cradle?! why cant i picture this in my mind?
Gemini –> Figurehead –> invert –> repeat= monkey climb 😀

I love my skinny poles but i think as a beginner most of the moves SHOULD be ok on a 50mm pole also. I think the most important thing is conditioning! the fun stuff comes later once you've built some strength.
Don't be disheartened! I had to repeat the beginners course twice when i first started poling (which is pretty unheard of, most girls pass first time) and i was so unfit i couldnt even make it the whole way through the warmup! Now, 20 months later I can shoulder mount and do all sorts of fun things.
Make sure you keep it fun- don't focus on the negatives 😀 so you can do a fireman! great! make it the very best fireman you can, then maybe try a back hook! practice the pole walk etc, make little routines.
i think veena's classes are fantastic but i personally also need guidance in a class setting so maybe if you start taking some lessons at a studio in conjunction with home poling chez veena's it might really help your form at least as a beginner!
good luck!

OMG! when i first started scorpio would give me THE WORST pole burn ever. It took about 6 months but after that the pain went away. I think its because your body subtly finds a way to get in it that causes less drag on the skin. plus your skin just toughens up a bit too.
Keep trying! Try different ways to get into it- i find it to be most pain free if i go from gemini to pike to scorpion.
(Sometimes though i do wonder if the scorpion actually did get less painful or whether i just discovered more painful moves- allegra makes scorpio seem like the most comfy move in the world!)

Thank you so much for all your help and advice. I feel pretty confident in my choice now and, hey, worst case scenario i'll buy another one! I'm averaging about one pole/ year of poling currently 😀
-
Ok, so i bit the bullet and bought me a brand new….
45MM TITANIUM GOLD X-PERT!!!
Now to wait 2 weeks for delivery and then i'll have my new baby up and running!
Gonna revamp my lounge room to be the new pole room- now i need to invest in a crash mat/ crash cushions and a larger mirror! YAY!!!!!

thanks for all the replies guys! i know there's a lot of these threads out there but i guess it just shows how confusing this topic is. i msg x-pole and asked if they could do a video demonstrating the differences in surfaces on youtube… we'll see
ninjachic- lol. me too! i live somewhere! i live in a squat house and i have ceiling envy!
sensualscimitar- my skin is dry until i warm up and then its too sweaty 🙁 i guess you can never have the 'perfect' skin type for pole! I'm thinking of trying pold physics moisturizer, hopefully it will make me more sticky fromt he get go rather than having to do 30 min warm ups!
Tali Kat- yay! melbournian! thank goodness i'm not the only one with the cold pole problem :S I am DEFINITELY downsizing. my studio used to only have 50mm poles but they recently brought in 45s and OMG its like a whole new world of pole opened up to me and my tiny hands! love skinny poles! not game to try 40s incase they're too skinny plus i figure if i stick with 45s i can transition easier between the two.
Since i'm going to keep my 50mm chrome up in my pole room and put the new pole in the living room i figure i'll get two different finishes so there's at least one pole on any given day that will feel good to work on. No more frustrating, aborted practice sessions from lack of grip!
Its looking like TG or brass are the better options. I almost wanna go brass just so the contrast in finishes is greater (ie. if i'm having a slippery day on chrome then my brass pole will be sticky and vice versa). Is that the case or should i hedge my bets and go with TG?
-
Hi fellow melbournian! good luck with the pole journey! Don't forget to share it with the rest of us 😀 a 45 chrome is my dream pole but i made the mistake of getting a 50. good choice!
-
your moisturizer budget becomes your grip aid budget.
-
dedejoy- you can prob do the jade because it requires more hamstring flexibility than hip flexibility which might be tough due to your injury!
-
no probs hazi- i was so happy when i figured it out i wanted to tell everyone!
-
good luck! you're videos on veena look amazing so i'm sure you'll do great even if its just a freestyle.
i love watching all you bobbi's girls, you're all taught to be amazing performers not just pole tricks. next time i'm in sydney I wanna do a pole grooves class so bad- the routines look AMAZING!
-
i hate static too! i think the things that look best on static are power tricks (like holding amazing shapes) or momentum tricks (where you create your own 'spin'). or you can just use the static pole for poses and things and do all your super awesome tricks on spin! good luck with the competition- is it pole candy?

I was in exactly the same position you were legend! for 6 months i just couldnt get those final 2 inches and i couldnt figure out why. I would push so hard to get there that i'd over do it and end up on the floor but spend the next 2 weeks in agony and be right back to where i started. i finally figured out 'the secret'.
there seems to be two parts to a good front split- front leg hamstring flexibilty and back leg hip flexor flexibilty. find out which of those two is holding you back. My hamstrings were fine (i can get my nose to leg in a pike) but my hip flexors sucked so I worked intensively on stretching my hip flexors and focused on that in my split training (eg. by pushing down my hips in a lunge and really arching my back) and within 3 weeks I got down to the ground comfortably and without pain or overstretching.
my mistake before this was leaning my chest forward and thus increasing my hamstring stretch (which i personally didnt need) and ignoring my hip flexors which actually required improvement.
sorry for writing an essay but hth! i was so excited to finally figure out what i was doing wrong for 18 months!
-
thanks for the advice! i'm really too scared to look at the audience and when i dance at home i often have my eyes closed so this is definitely something i have to work on. i shall have to rope my hubby in to be a pretend audience
-
it took me 18 months of regular stretching (with two 2 week breaks coz i over did it and had to let my hip flexor recover) to get my splits on one side. Im still not there with my bad leg but its getting closer!

Also, what is polers butt?!?!? I've never heard of it before and I need to know!
