My pole school was asked to take part in a fitness study into the health benefits of pole dance in terms of heart rate and cals burned per min for the university of Stirling ( Scotland UK in 2011) this was done over several days with 30 students of different skill levels. Each class was 90 mins and included warm up, pole moves (of that skill beginner, intermediate advanced and super advanced) and cardio filler/traditions and floor work and a cool down. Each student wore a heart monitor throughout. The results were interesting despite skill level and having rests inbetween moves and waiting your turn to go on the pole ( some students shared a pole although no more than 2 to a pole) they still burned a large amount of calories. Although super advanced folk did burn slightly more cals than beginners it surprisingly wasn’t much more. And despite some folk having a few mins rest whilst waiting to have a go on the pole the cals burned did not decrease as was previously thought would happen. It infact backs up the theory that the best way to excerise is in short bursts of energy followed by a small rest period then a burst of energy again and so on rather than continual exercise. The study also tested the heart monitors on students in a body combat class, body pump and an areobics class. It was found that on average a 90 min pole class burned approx 600 cals and infact burned more over all or was on par with some of the other fitness classes. Thus proving that pole should be recognised as a sport in its own right. Hope this helps ladies xc

I’m not very good at them on that side but it will be a new challenge! X

MemberJanuary 13, 2012 at 11:37 am in reply to: Strange back pain, pole taking its toll?Ok guys so I saw the physio today it is muscle imbalances due to me using one side mostly over the other when poling! They discovered when I stand up I tilt slightly to the left side, my left shoulder is also higher as is my right hip bone, this causing lower back pain on my right side! Pretty annoyed at myself for relying heavily on my left side too much! I will be retraining on my right side from now on to try and balance things out and will be making sure my students do this more too! Just realise how important it is to perform moves and get them strong in both sides .

MemberJanuary 6, 2012 at 11:36 am in reply to: Strange back pain, pole taking its toll?Fingers crossed its a strain and not anything more serious, I’ll definatley insist on an x ray but don’t hold out much hope. One person suggested it could be a strain due to imbalance on my right side ( I have a very bad habit of using my left to invert as im left dominant in poleand know I should try and use my right more) may have weakened the right lower side of my back perhaps.

However before I took the plunge and went self employed I had a full time job in mobile phone sales, whilst teaching classes ( for other people) when I finally decided to open my own pole school the pressure of running it plus having a full time job was too much and eventually something had to give so I was brave and quit my job to go self employed! I hated my boss and my Job in general and my dream for a while was to be my own boss running a pole school so it wasn’t a hard decision, plus I felt the degree I achieved at university was going to waste! All my instructors however have full time jobs. One works in finance, one is a pharmastist, one is a receptionist and the other an administrator. They typically help me out 1-2 classes per week depending how busy classes are and what days/nights I can do. Let me just say that running a pole school extends beyond teaching, when I’m not teaching I’m planning classes, doing a tonne of paperwork, answering emails/phone calls, planning pole events/workshops, advertising and training. I would say I’m always working! But I love it x

I too have this problem and have done since I was a little girl. Ever since I could remember iv always had a little pot belly, I think I was born with it!! When I was a little girl right up until 16 I was really skinny and underweight for my height but yet still had a bit of a belly. Getting older and filling out a bit did it no favours. After 7 years of pole my core must be strong because of the moves I can perform, I’m a pole instructor after all but alas STILL have a bit of a belly, and Im a healthy weight ( I’m now 30) I worked closely with a friend of mine who is a well known a brilliant fitness instructor who had me on a special abs programme, I also did a lot of cardio at her gym and cut back on the crappy foods.. The result? I still have a belly!! I was just more toned and slimmer! It’s so frustrating! Iv never had kids either! Iv spent all of my life sucking it in and having to avoid clothing that shows off my stomach, wearing a bikini is a nightmare for me and don’t get me started on pole performance outfits! Getting one that leaves my sides and back bare but covers my belly is a nightmare, performing my fav moves sometimes only highlights my problem area. I really really want lipo. I think for me it’s the only way to get rid if it.

Magic blonde thanks for that link to the hed kandy extensions, I’d never heard of these and they look fab! I always get pre bonded glue extentions, but when I have them removed sometimes I need to save up for a month or so for a new set and in that time I resort to the clip ins ( coz I feel bald otherwise) iv always used salon services clip ins but I don’t think they are that great. After seeing these ones however I’ll defo be getting some! Xx

MemberAugust 24, 2011 at 6:09 am in reply to: problems with studio neighbours prejudiced? Thanks everyone for your views and ideas. I did email the manager on sat afternoon to let her know what happened but so far iv had no repliy which is either good or bad. I share the studio with my friend who teaches other fitness classes like body combat, body jam, core ect. Her classes are usually early evening and are before mine, so that’s why some of the students were waiting outside, they didn’t want to walk into a high energy body combat class for example 10 mins till the end, and disturb anyone. But we all wait in reception now if we are early. My signage is defiantly not sexual and it’s very subtile so I doubt it’s offending anyone. I also think to be on the safe side any pole parties will just have to be held in one of the local bar/clubs as we did before. It’s more hassle, time consuming and money spent but at least we don’t run the risk of another incident like last time. Xx

MemberAugust 22, 2011 at 8:11 am in reply to: problems with studio neighbours prejudiced?Hi thanks for your views so far. I sent an email to the business manager just to let her know what happened as I was sure an email of complaint from this guy was bound to make it to her inbox. I have also been thinking about setting up a little changing area in the studio but as it’s not terribly big I’m not sure if it would work. Besides most of the girls just get ready in the studio anyways. We set up an opening launch night when we first moved in for our friends and students and sent invites to most of the building but no one in the buliding came along bar 2 girls ( who now take classes and have indroduced many friends which is great) we have also posted flyers through the door saying hello and giving discounts off classes. But so far it hasn’t really worked. I prob would like to go around and introduce myself but I’m a little apprehensive to disturb anyone whilst they are working. The predjudiced thing I myself was unsure about, however a few of my students have encountered other people in the buliding a few times and one even got into a lift with one woman who then started to complain about how offensive she thought the idea of pole classes were, unknown to her she was speaking to a pole student.!! Sigh!!

I own a pole school in the Uk and have been toying with this idea for a while. I’m pretty sure a few nightclubs I know
Would be interested. Years back when I was a student at a pole school, our teacher regularly asked us if we wanted to pole go go dance. She had an arrangement with one of the big clubs in my home town were they had feature dance nights. A lot of the girls got to do it and got paid. They said it was a lot of fun, I never managed to do it though! Lol -
Hiya my friend used to be a pole go go dancer in one of the big clubs in Ibiza. We are talking about 9 years ago though. She would be up on a raised stage in front of thousands. Iv seen some vids, some of the girls doing handsprings and jade spilts and other acrobatic pole moves! Looks amazing!
There also used to be a normal bar/club were I live that had a pole on the bar. They had girls dancing on it for half an hour at a time, again no stripping…. Although the funny thing is most of them were ex strippers. -

thanks for the help and the vid posts everyone, my laptop was playing up so couldnt get online till now! Im gonna go try out a few things and let yu know how i get on https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif xx

thanks charley, joni and e-vamp https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Charley i can do normal shouldermount (no kicking), air invert (no swinging) and shouldermount v and split just fine so im confident i have the ab strength for it (hopefully! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif ) My main problem was trying to picture in my head how to get into position for an air shouldermount, what move id have to do before hand ect, so you think figurehead would be the best bet then? Another question! whats the best way to get into the figurehead? dont think iv tried that either.
If anyone has an youtube vids or vids on here of them doing it it would really help me (im the kind of girl who needs to see a move over and over to try and work it out)
thanks https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif -
Hi im a studio owner/teacher and i offer a choice. We do first hour of tricks, and last halfhour /20 mins of filler and flor work, linking in moves to create a routine. Everyone is different and not everone likesor is interested with the sensual side of it so they have the chioce to just carry on with their moves or they can join in on the filler work. I dont like to force girls into it or make them feel uncomfortable. There are other studios near by that make their students do the sensual sexy side of pole, weather they like it or not and there are other schools that dont believe in it at all and are purely trick based. I Like to think we offer a good mix of both https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif but yeh i think if you feel you HAVE to do sexy dancing in your class it can look forced, and make you feel worse about doing it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

Yeh I do use my scales a lot, and this is always how iv measured my weight, its always been reliable, if the scales said I put on 5 pounds, guaranteed my clothes would feel a bit tighter and id look a little bit heavier. But yeh its v hard to tell with muscle. Just taught my class there, one of my friends commented how slim I looked! Ironic considering I’m much heavier, but it must just be lean muscle….or I’m hoping anyways lol. Arrrgg gotta stop using my scales, its like an addiction I can’t help but look!
