Great info abcollins! This sort of stuff fascinates me. Definitely agree about how I completely underestimate fat and overestimate muscles, I think I always have. And I put "bulked up" in quotes, because anytime I say it, I am being snarky. 🙂 I have NEVER met a woman who was lifting olympic weights 4-5 times a week (which is fairly intense for training on one's own for amateur pursuits) who bulked up with muscle mass. It just doesn't happen. What I do see, is people rewarding hard weightlifting workouts with heavy protein shakes and/or unhealthy meals, because they feel feel like they worked hard enough that the calories are accounted for in the workout. This was the biggest mistake I saw with people who lifted. Or trained anything hardcore. Because not eating healthy will bulk you up, but it's not with muscle.

Agreed. I am not that large, but I am a 32DD. Which makes buying ANY bra in a store problematic and expensive. They always ask… well what about 34?… It doesnt fit! Godd@mmit! I promise! I tried! Multiple times! Because the DD bras are usually not nearly as cute as the C bras.
I have stopped trying to buy pole wear online. I have an ass. I just do, its a way bigger problem than my boobs, which really don't seem that big to me, just big enough to be a problem. NOTHING covers my bum unless its really un-cute bicycle shorts style. I dont like butt cleavage and cheek peek. Both of those are a huge problem for me. AT THE SAME TIME. gross.

I like the discount dance ones as well. I am tall, 5'9" and my thighs are thick enough that I am not able to pull them up past about 6 inches above my knee. I dont really mind this, but its something to keep in mind if you are fairly tall and have big strong quads, as I like to think. 😉

I think that if you like weightlifting go for it! I used to train weightlifting a lot (4-5 times a week) during high school and college, long before I even was a poler, and I really liked it. Bonus: with all that lifting, most of which was Olympic technique, I never "bulked up". Proper lifting technique can be tricky though, so definitely make sure you have a spot, even just to correct alignment, etc, otherwise your hard work will never show good results and you might train in some injuries/imbalances.
If I had to guess, I would say that the pros probably train a lot (not just teach, but their own specific training times, which likely includes endurance work and conditioning work on the pole and off) and eat clean etc. Have to do both. As with anything, you just have to decide how much you want to put in. I think cardio and weight training can benefit pole. And weighttraining can be really good for fat burn long term. Building muscle requires your body to maintain that muscle. Which comes downo to eating properly.

Don't worry about the height issue. Tall confident beautiful women are awesome! I am 5'9" and like 7" heel best, though I do have some 8" heels for dancing as well. I also love high heels. I have a collection of them. And its been that way since I was in high school! The funny thing is… I don't often dance in them because I don't take the time to get used to them, but I love what they look like. I also dont drive in heels or flip flops. Barefeet or running shoes only! But I really only started doing that in when I drive a manual transmission.

MemberDecember 3, 2012 at 12:20 pm in reply to: Pole and Heels, and pole and bare feet….that is the topic, lolI love the look of heels… I really think a good 7in spike heel makes my butt look smaller. 😉 However, I am a klutz and will not wear shoes on carpet, so I almost never dance in them as I have a carpeted apartment. Which means I get no practice in them. Often when I wear heels, I only do floorwork for that reason. I spend the entire time worrying about falling over. That being said, I think a bare foot can be intensely emotive, and for me, that is completely lost if I put on shoes. I love to dance barefoot, and I do monkeyfoot a lot, so… can't really use shoes for those types of moves. I say both! or whatever you want!

Also, definitely spring for a different pole if you are planning on throwing spins or inverting. Depending on what you want, X-Pole, Lil Mynx, or Platinum Stages can be solid home poles, and there are some other brands that are permanently mounted that are definitely good as well. Just search the forum for info, there is a lot of information!

MemberNovember 28, 2012 at 5:50 pm in reply to: Can you put up a Peek A Boo pole on a popcorn ceiling?Sometimes, even with a studfinder, finding a joist/beam on a popcorn ceiling can be difficult because the studfinder cannot run along the ceiling texture evenly. What I have found that helps is to get a large piece of cardboard, and have someone hold that flat up against the ceiling, and then run the stud finder over the cardboard. Because it's flat, you can maintain contact with the studfinder, keeping it from freaking out and giving bum readings (also keeps texture out of your eyes). Usually when I do this, I also make sure to calibrate it with cardboard on the wall. Since there is typically little to no texture on the wall, its easy to find studs, even by tapping and then calibrating is easily and quickly done.

I used Chiropractic to ease the pain and get my sacrum realigned (it was rotating), and that was great as far as treatment of symptoms because I could get relief that way. I was only able to control and keep the pain from coming back with physical therapy exercises, which basically amounted to psoas stretching and core conditioning to get my self balanced out.
I would think that the sharp pain might be considered stabbing? If you can, really do try to get it checked out. Because once you know whats wrong you can start rehabbing it.

Definitely get this checked out! While I am not sure based on location if your issues are similar to mine, I definitely have dealt with some sharp stabbing pains, deep in the hips. For me, it was brought on by marathon training, and was never an issue while I was doing something (ie running, stretching, dancing), only afterwards. I ignored it, and it got so bad that it was affecting my ability to do my job, (I was no longer able to climb a ladder without stabbing pains, and I was a building inspector, so I climbed a lot of ladders), and it took almost a year to rehab it because I didnt get it checked out in the beginning. It still an issue I carry around today (I ran that marathon in 2008), though I can keep the pain under control. It ended up being a SI joint issue. Do not wait on getting it checked out, it will likely only cause more pain and trouble if you do.

I just had my first experience with a studio peeper last night! It's so… completely unnerving. Especially since the teacher and I were alone at the studio at night. She called the guy out and he moved along, but he could have been standing there peeping through the curtains for the entire time and if we hadnt seen him, he still would have been there when we went to leave around 10 pm. I just don't like feeling that way. I shouldn't have to. If that guy is still around, definitely let the studio owners know.

I might have to try some sweet vixen couture, or pole skivvies! I have heard great things about both. I have tried Bad Kitty, and they just dont fit quite right. I have a booty, and a small waist, so… lots of things start peeping out when I am poling. I used to always pole in my underwear, never used anything else, until now, when I am starting to go back to class, and have realized that I dont have ANYTHING that provides reliable coverage, except a few swim suit bottoms, but they just look like underwear and no one wears briefcut bottom at the studios I have checked out, so I feel kind of silly looking like I am standing there in my underwear.

MemberOctober 19, 2012 at 9:35 pm in reply to: Instructors – what do you call these moves?Wouldn’t the arm/leg positions that are off the pole just be variations? You can do Allegra without grabbing that foot. The foot grabbing and position of that arm in relation to the pole are variations. At least, that is how I look at it.
