I have the rumble rollers, a high density black roller, a cardboard roller (yikes by far the most dense!), the bead stick, and I also use tennis balls, and I would have to say that tennis balls can be the most intense. If you are just beginning, I would go for something solid but not too intense. I would say rumble rollers are not for beginners unless you are of the more masochistic type. Or just know that pain will not be something that keeps you from rolling. Like anything else, you want to begin at the beginning and work into doing it because rolling takes a little time to make sense to your body and there is definitely pain associated with it. The roller I use the most is the black high density extra firm roller by isokinetics. I have the 6" diameter by 36" length. Definitely avoid the white rollers or other not firm rollers. I have found that if I actually use them, they quickly lose shape.

MemberApril 13, 2012 at 4:52 pm in reply to: help!!! (dying fabric for competition costume)Maybe search different types of dye on a site like amazon and look through the comments/reviews? Not totally helpful, but I recently dyed some canvas slippers for a performance piece and what do you know, one of the trims on the slippers was synthetic and did not take dye well at all. In the end it did not matter, but synthetics can be really hard to dye evenly, etc. My simple/basic research has not led me to any one product just yet. But would definitely be interested in what others have to say!

Those are so awesome! What brand of shoes does she use? Are those pleasers?

One thing I also think is really important and it was mentioned a little bit above is this… Decide on a costume/outfit way earlier than you think you need to, run the choreo entirely in said outfit (plus the undergarments/double side tape/and whatever hairstyle), and be sure to have given yourself enough time prior to competition to get a different outfit if it doesnt work or if you dont like it. Absolutely DO NOT be wearing anything for the first time at a comp. Issues you have never thought of will show up.
I have seen people leave costume to the last minute and then its really stressful when it doesn't work or doesn't fit right. Plus if it had to ship, there is always that stress of it not showing up on time….etc. Also, make sure you have backups, especially if you are dancing in shoes. Buckles break a lot, etc and it always seems like it happens at the worst of times. Bring a little sewing kit with you the day of the competition, too.
I really do feel like costuming can be immensely stressful, especially when it goes wrong. But with a little planning, costuming can be almost entirely stress-free. There's so much other stuff that will be stressful and cannot be alleviated with planning, so taking the time to get that organized is well worth it!

MemberApril 10, 2012 at 3:16 pm in reply to: X pole or lil mynx?or Platinum Stages….so confused?I have also used all three poles pretty regularly, I perform occasionally on PS, I have owned both PS and Xpole, and my most recent training and some rehearsing have been on Lil Mynx.
I think in cases such as these, you just need to do your research as much as possible. They all look great on paper, but there will always be something about the pole that you think you might not like. You will most likely never know until you are able to try it out.
My personal experience is that a fully functional and in working-order PS pole is the best for me. However, PS doesnt always get it right the first time. I tend to feel that Xpole set up can be needlessly fussy (but typically has worked for me just fine) and that I do not feel comfortable giving a Lil Mynx my full weight with that plastic upper cuff and the potentially sliding of the foot. But I tend to love spinny mode and I like throwing spins really hard on static.
That said, I have worked on all these poles and every last one of them adequately fulfilled a need (the need to pole! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif) I was never unable to do things on a lil mynx or xpole or ps once they were set up and ready to go. They were all good poles to learn on.
Maybe think about the portability that you need, whether you want a spin option, and what metal/finish you would like. Some of the poles will automatically not fit your criteria and can then be taken off the list. Hooray process of elimination!

If you feel uncomfortable showing up in booty shorts and sports bra initially, just come in layers. I usually show up in yoga pants and tank top when going somewhere new and then peel off to sports bra and shorts as I warm up if it feels appropriate for the class. It almost always does.

Ugh. That is horrible. Sorry you had to go through that, but also happy to hear you stood up for yourself! What a creeper! Though some people would be that damn creepy even if there was no pole in the living room. Be safe ladies!
-
Haha I have had home inspectors, plumbers, appliance repair men, and exterminators all in my apartment where I had the pole in the middle of the living room, so they all saw it. All have been good sports about it and not creepy, but they DEFINITELY remember the apartment with the pole.

MemberApril 4, 2012 at 1:48 pm in reply to: What is your “off the pole” workout routine?Crossfit scares the heck out of me! And I have had a LOT of olympic lifting technique training in my past. (good lord, its been over 7 years since I have even done a snatch!) I hate going to the gym because I sit there and watch people do it wrong. I also see trainers teaching form incorrectly. All. The. Time. Crossfit definitely seems like something that is only advisable if you know your technique. Really well, too, since once a person gets tired, technique is usually the first thing to go.
I cross train pole with stretching workouts, as well as teaching and training trapeze & tissu. I am going to try to get into some yoga classes now that my boyfriend has started his training on the mainland, and also I bought a groupon for Pilates. I am very excited for that! I have found that I don't stick to workouts on my own, with the exception of running, which I don't even do anymore. Though I really liked my booty the best when I was doing that. 🙂

The Blow Monkeys – You Don't Own Me
Alice Cooper – Poison
Poison – Talk Dirty To Me, Nothing But a Good Time
Berlin – Take My Breath Away 🙂
Madonna – Justify My Love
A few random options (including some glam rock that ISN'T Def Leppard. I love them for dancing, but sometimes that gets a little boring. And I love Poison. A lot).

OK here goes…

Was going to say that the closed/covered eye is only useful (I think) once you stop bc you’re dizzy. I don’t think an eye patch would help ;). Another option that some of the girls say help is to make hand “binoculars”. I guess narrowing the vision can be helpful. Again, won’t prevent the dizziness, just might help after you get a bit dizzy.

MemberMarch 27, 2012 at 2:09 pm in reply to: spin mode barf fest! What should you do (or where should you look) with your eyes?I know. Add a swing to that and the spinning/Swing Combo can turn a lot of people off to it. I never have had a problem in the roughly three years I have done trap, until recently, when I closed my eyes in a single knee hang from the bar. It was swinging/spinning, and I was inverted. Can’t do that with eyes closed. Eyes open… No problem. Haha I was always the little kid on the fishing boat that never gets seasick. Even when the rest of my family does. And

MemberMarch 27, 2012 at 1:46 pm in reply to: spin mode barf fest! What should you do (or where should you look) with your eyes?i know that it's different for everyone, but finding an inward focus might help. this is not necessarily closing your eyes. i do a lot of dance trapeze on a swivel, which can maintain a beautiful spin like a pole. i don't get motionsick, seasick, etc etc. but everyone is different. if i close my eyes spinning on trap (only recently, wtf?!) i am instantly dizzy. its so much worse on trap than it ever is/was on pole. i thought i had inner ears of steel! what's horrible is that my trapeze duo partner can get motionsick watching ME on a spinning trapeze! from the ground! we keep ginger on hand (dried, pickled, chews, candied). Its not like bonine or dramamine, but can be helpful after the fact. also, sometimes closing/covering one eye can be helpful when it gets a bit much.

I noticed in bad kitty sizing that when I ordered the spiderback in medium, its a bit too small. I didnt want to deal with shipping back and forth, and its just for me so I kept it. I also have the iron x top in medium and it fits quite well. I think both the bondage and iron x tops run slightly larger in medium than the spider back, I have both and like the medium fit better than the spider back in medium. Also noticed that while I generally like the brazil shorts, I have a round booty and tiny waist, and they gap pretty badly.
I want some Mika, its so cute!

o yeah, also, my favorite mascara (if I wear makeup, I always wear mascara… my stubby little lashes are blond https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif) is Givenchy. Phenomen'Eyes Effet Extension. I literally can't go back to a regular mascara wand anymore, even though the price tag kind of freaks me out.

I am guessing that one doesn't actually NEED the cleanser, but that like any other product, they will always have their own companion product. I just wasn't sure if it was the cleanser or the product itself that everyone was raving about. Must be the product, if no one here is using the cleanser!
-
This may be a silly question, but does the Clarisonic provide great results if not using the Clarisonic cleanser product? Or is it the combo of the two that is so great? I am curious to try the brush product but have insanely sensitive skin, and would therefore probably never use the cleanser that comes with it.

MemberFebruary 3, 2012 at 7:37 pm in reply to: Pole Shoes that look like Cowboy BootsI agree, could probably just use real cowboy boots? If you want a boot look you could also go with the revolver boots, I saw a pair recently that I really liked, but they don't so much look like cowboy boots. Just the revolver part and bullet belt makes it a little reminiscent of cowboys/western.

MemberFebruary 1, 2012 at 9:19 pm in reply to: Nerve damage in back … from inverting? Or one-sided pole?I would agree, don't discount chiropractic. There are some amazing practitioners out there who are more than capable of administering treatments, as well as recommending exercise and stretching regimens etc, to correct the underlying issues. At heart, it has to do with alignment, but most of them do not stop there, though I suppose it depends on where you go. I have found that chiropracters, like doctors, often have a specialty demographic, so find a sports chiro with emphasis in dance/gymnastics. I would go to the chiropracter weekly if only I could afford it. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

MemberFebruary 1, 2012 at 8:22 pm in reply to: My first REAL DANCE AUDITION. AHHHH. Heeelp! My advice would be to know your audience and keep it simple. I watched one of your videos that you had posted with the audition in mind, and it was great! You have a fantastic presence/personality on stage, so capitalize on that. Burlesque is all about character, engaging the audience, and being provocative. Since the audition is with a burlesque troupe, you might consider adding some really simple burlesque elements in addition to humor to the piece you perform, even if its freestyle, ie a glove or stocking peel, use a fan or boa etc? That will help make them see how well you can integrate a pole piece into a burlesque show, revue, performance etc. Because you know they would love a pole dancer so they can have that dance variety, but they really want a dynamic burlesque pole performer the most. I think you can do it and best of luck!

MemberFebruary 1, 2012 at 6:50 pm in reply to: Nerve damage in back … from inverting? Or one-sided pole?I know that when I was marathon training I had a lot of little training pains, trigger points, and muscle overuse injuries. I went to a sports chiropracter who specializes in Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) which is a soft tissue manipulation method that works to release muscle scar tissue to ease overuse injuries similar to massage (very very generalized description) and IT CHANGED MY LIFE. As a runner that is. I have also found it to be a really helpful therapy for injuries I have acquired in aerial training. ART can be administered by a chiro, LMT, or PT though it originated from the chiropractic field. If it's not something that you have tried yet, it might be worthwhile if you can find a practitioner.
