Cool! Thanks for that info. I did contact fancy feather and I think I might go through her. Is there a reason people like bamboo staves so much? Is it just a visual thing? I have tried both and acrylic are lighter but the staves are bigger. Hmmm. I am still waiting on pricing. I think I might have to let go of the peacock accents, they are driving the price up, but I love them!

O yeah, also wanting the fans to be able to open and close, because I want to be able to incorporate that into the dancing. Maybe thats silly though, I am most definitely an amateur when it comes to fan dancing.

Thanks so much for the info! I keep thinking I want to just make my own, but then I get carried away with the feathers, because buying fans feather by feather is not cheap when you aren't wholesale pricing them. Plus shipping to Hawaii is always insane.

Bahahaha! Now that you mention it… 🙂 Puts me in mind of a good comedy piece.

Is knowing the names of the moves really important to you? I have noticed through my classes and learning things on youtube, and talking with other dancers that a lot of floorwork moves do not have names, or each person doing the move has their own name for it and the move ends up having 5 or more names. Are you needing to know the names because you would be teaching the moves once you have gotten them down? I find that typically real exotic dancer moves have no names and are often the product of just floor dancing a lot, especially when tired from pole work but still having to dance. Ie, go to the source if you dont mind going to strip clubs! 🙂 Especially if you pick things up quickly after seeing them.

I would hate to see performance enhancing substances become the norm for our sport. I do think that if it gains a typical global platform (ie on the scale of the Olympics) one should expect to see it occur. Because that sort of fierce competition tends to bring out a do anything to win attitude. Its intense. As a former NCAA athlete, I can tell you there are many substances that I was randomly drug tested for, most of which are legal substances but that you are not allowed to have above certain levels in your body. Caffeine is one of them. In fact, if one regularly imbibes (or over-imbibes) in all those many many energy drinks, you just might fail a 'drug test' and caffeine would only be one of the substances that is a problem. I think people commonly think that steroids are the typical 'drugs' that athletes get busted for, but in reality, there are a lot of things out there that enhance performance and most of them are legal substances.

    a mesmerizing ring piece…

I don't train ring, but a couple of women in our company do. As far as spinning goes, pay attention and invest in good hardware. Swivels are not all made equal. If spinning is something you would like to do, a good swivel is invaluable.

I use my 'dance name' as yet another aspect to my costuming and character as a burlesque and aerial performer. My real self is shy. She is NOT a dancer, but someone who pretends to. She doesn't perform for anyone. Because she is a nerdy scientist with no real dance training who is too worried about maintaining a professional persona to be anything other than under the radar.

Alice B. Heartless on the other hand, wears animal print and lace.  She has no problem staring an audience in the face and owning her moves. She'll eat you alive. THIS is why I have a dance name. Because it lets me be whoever I want and it makes dancing much less vulnerable. For me, it's one of the only ways for me to perform at all. And I LOVE performing.

The reason this has nothing to do with stripping for me, is quite simply because I don't strip. Never have, most likely never will. And that's just a personal choice for myself, one that I don't bother even pretending to make for other people.

In the DVD she says to stretch 5 times a week to gain flexibility and 3 times a week to maintain. I think it all comes down to your own body, and what your goals are. If gaining a lot of flexibility is a priority for you, then you will have to put in a considerable amount of time and effort. If maintaining what you already have is fine, or if you want to just get into stretching because you like doing it, but have no specific stretching goals, then spending less time per day or week would be ok. Its always good to slowly work your way into any fitness regimen, but again, it depends on your body 🙂

CapFeb, I think you would just need to contact DVK and see what the shipping options are. As its local, I just dont have that information because I don't really need it for once! However, the tins are not very large, and I think would lend themselves well to shipping as they aren't glass or anything. I bet the easiest way would be to contact through the facebook page linked above.

I just reread through this thread (so funny, some of these names!) and since posting that my burlesque name was Bijou Blanc, I have totally changed it.  I had a couple of friends check out a video, and told them to name that dancer. And thus, my new burlesque name was born: Alice B. Heartless. I love this name!

I second Gummypia. I am really liking DVKs Black and Blue Balm. When I didn't have that, or don't have it with me, I use Traumeel, in the gel version. I don't like creams, but I do know others who use the cream Traumeel and really like it. I have also used arnica in pill form, but could never really tell if it helped. Its not expensive though, and I have always used it at the same time as using other arnica topicals, so I know that the whole arsenal works well for me personally.

I do consulting work as an environmental scientist, primarily helping clients with compliance issues, environmental permitting, managing field efforts for site clean ups, and assessing environmental conditions in the field, as well as technical writing for the all the reports that our fieldwork generates.

If I could do it all over again, I would have gotten in to physical therapy, and as many other physical well being modalities (Pilates, LMT, ART, GYRO) as I could afford! But now I feel stuck. 🙁

Obviously, I don't know the particulars of schedule this year but I just checked my email thread and the last time it took about 2.5 months to get feedback.

I also asked… but I know they are busy. The last time I asked for feedback it took a few weeks minimum to get the critique back.

I think it gets frustrating for people because when we say educate yourself about the competition, there is no way to educate yourself for bias. Know that it's there, but nowhere in any competition's requirements/rules/application does it say "don't worry about making our deadlines, ignore our submittal requirements, our judges only want to see (fill in the blank)" etc.

I know it has been said that this is swept under the rug in lots of competitions, but that shouldn't mean that we as a community should be ok with that. I think this is a chance to work for positive change. It should not be chance to belittle, attack, etc organizations or competitors. I think we all understand that. Because this does affect the pole community at large. Especially in the sense of it being more accessible to those outside the community AND each and every bid to make pole seen as a sport on the global stage, whether that's a personal goal for anyone, or not.

I love dancing barefoot, and I love how dancing in heels creates such beautiful lines etc. however, I totally agree that shoes that fit make all the difference. I have a very hard time finding shoes that fit. With no halfsize options I find that I am NEVER comfortable in heels, always too small or too big, and usually always too wide. I do know however, that just wearing them around the house is the best way to get used to wearing them. Any time I have done that, I have really been able to see a difference in the subsequent dance videos.  I also agree that choosing not to dance in heels is totally fine. If you don't like them, don't wear them.

At the Pilates studio I take classes at we have to remove our slippers outside the door (its Hawaii so very few people show up in shoes), and wipeour feet with foot wipes they provide. To me, this only makes sense! When spending time on the floor, its always nice that its clean.
