Darn it… why don't I live in LA?? Are there any conventions closer to the Northern border?

Welcome! I started myself at 24 and it was a wonderful challenge to take on. The strength and confidence you will develop are truly priceless. If you cannot find a school close to where you are, the lessons offered by Veena are a great way to start. If you truly do enjoy it and want more, you might be able to find a studio later on, but there's no shame in starting on your own! Just make sure for your own safety, that when you get to certain moves, anything upside down for instance, you always have someone with you for safety reasons, at least at first. Cheers!

    Hey!

I have the same problem, or at least I did not too long ago. I'm still a little awkward at times when I move but what polergirl said is very true. When you first start out, you probably feel weird and clumsy, the moves don't flow well and you have to "get back in to it" probably half the time. BUT by forcing yourself to dance, you are taking the first step in making these moments less awkward and more familiar and easy.

When I first started pole dancing one of the exercices our teacher made us do was to take turns dancing around the pole (improvising) while the lights were out. People could not see features, just silhouettes. And you know what? The BEST transition moves I ever did came from those exercices. When the lights are out, you feel less conscious about what you look like and you can just focus on enjoying the music and yourself.

So my advice would be to do that. To dance the first couple of times in the dark and just feel the music so you can learn to love the way you move. And at some point, DO record yourself. That's an excellent idea because you might find, after you watch yourself on film, that those "awkward moments" actually brought out some beautiful transition moves. Besides, this will be a great way to learn to improvise if you ever are in a situation where you forget a move during a routine (which has happened to me….) !

    Best of luck!

Awesome thread! I have lots of new songs to listen to!

As for me, I’d say depending on how I feel,

    Dirrty – Christina Aguilera
My love is like …Wo – Mya
    Sexy Love – Ne-Yo
Sex Bomb – Tom Jones (Old classics die hard…)
LoveSong – Snake River Conspiracy (LOVE this one)
    Don’t forget to Breathe – Bitter:Sweet
    etc….

Frankly, I can dance to pretty much anything, depending on my mood but these are the ones I can come up with right now. I just love dancing so almost anything will do!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

    Awesome!
I did 3 of Karol’s workshops (all but the Pro pole one) and loved them! I’ve been with Ottawa Pole fitness for a little while and I find it very good but I always end up taking twice the same levels since it’s such a short session. They look very similar to a pair I saw someone wear the other day. They were black and a little shorter than the ones in this picture but otherwise they looked identical. I’ve been trying to find those for weeks! Someone told me they (the ones I’m talking about) came from a brand of clothing called "sweet vixen". I tried to find them but no luck so far… anyone know this brand? I’ll try to go to Walmart to get those 5 $ shorts!! They look awesome!!

    Hi! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I’m from Ottawa, Ontario. Not too close but still in the same province! Welcome!
You have great pics! Those moves are not beginner at all! And I absolutely love the kitty!! He/she is adorable!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif

I have to go to Toronto now! There seems to be a lot of fellow pole dancers there!

June 24, 2010 at 1:13 pm in reply to: Common injuries? What not to try at home!

    Hi there!

I’m not an expert on the subject but I’d say for me the most common injuries are bruises, skin burns and the occasional muscle pulling or cramp. These mostly happen when you learn a new move. After your body gets used to the position, the bruises and burns usually stop. An accident can obviously occur even if you take all the precautions in the world (problems with a slippery pole, sweaty hands, stress etc.), but there are things you can do to reduce chances of injuries. I think the first and most important thing is the warm-up/stretching before and the cool down/stretching after. I do those for 15 to 20 minutes before and after my time on the pole. This way, I’m not as sore the next day. As for serious injuries well I’ve never had any so I can’t help you much there, but I’d say in some cases "fear" may be a problem. What I mean is, if you’re panicking over a move, but still try it, you might sweat more, or go too fast and end up hurting yourself. Go with your instinct. When you try a new move or one you’re still trying to master, I’d say have a spotter with you and only go as far as what you’re comfortable with.

    I hope this helps a little! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cat.gif

Congrats on getting a new pole!!

There was girl who recommended this article for being able to do the splits in no time flat in another thread.

This is my first post ever on this site. Yay! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Thank you so much for this article and for all this information! I’m about as flexible as a pole so these are wonderful. I actually started stretching while listening to relaxing music, just to calm myself and relax my muscles (this way the pain feels more like mild discomfort). I’ve been doing it for about 2 weeks and I can see and feel the difference. Teamed up with these exercices, I can’t wait to see the results!

I still have a loonggg way to go, but this will make it easier! Thank you!!

And good luck to all the not so flexible people out there! Consistency is the key! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I’ll go say bye and thank you today at the party. Karol is awesome!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
