    Thanks Veena!

  • I don’t have any sort of gymnastics background. I competed after my first year of pole. Things didn’t go as I had planned but having to choreograph, pick music, think about “selling” my character etc etc is probably one of the best experiences I have had with pole. Getting outside of my comfort zone made me grow as a pole dancer 🙂 I would suggest trying at least once to decide if it is something for you or not.

I am a part of the twisted grip club however, it’s not all that I train but personally I feel that for my body it is ok. But I don’t think that every move is right for everyone and that should be respected. I would talk to your teacher…I used to take private classes at my studio because I could say I don’t want to spend time learning something (ie. I dislike teddy) but I’m at a level where it makes more sense to be in a class and learn one off things. My instructor and I had a chat about me going into regular classes and we came to an agreement if they were doing something I didn’t want to participate in, I’d politely do my own thing. The only thing they asked was that I didn’t try new stuff during that time so they could keep instructing.

If I were an instructor I would respect you bringing that forward. 🙂

I don’t do any weights or anything like that. Aside from pole I do a little trapeze but I don’t think it helps much in terms of where I am with pole.

For myself, aerial shoulder mount happened by mistake one day and I was like you able to do it hit and miss and by hooking my foot. At the studio my instructor had me conditioning by laying on the floor, shoulder mounting without momentum. Continue to move up the pole slightly, each time I move up the more challenging it is. I really had to teach myself not to use momentum and to use my core. For me, that was the key to consistent aerial shouldermounts. It also takes time to get used to and perfect 🙂

    Good luck 🙂

During a business meeting a few months ago I went to brass vixens and loved it. I took a private lesson with Miss Tia and told her that I’m not into sexy, I like strength and tricks. She immediately kicked off her heels and taught me so many new things. I was so incredibly happy with my experience. I am actually headed back there for another business meeting this upcoming week and will be taking another private lesson with her 🙂

I purchased this contraption for help with my middles

It shows the degree of your split so it’s super easy to measure progress.

My studio owner has a few studios, some have mostly brass and some are all chrome. They have both the 40mm and 50mm in the studios. I prefer the 50mm even though I use a 45mm at home. As for the spinning pole, they don’t teach them until the advanced levels at my studio. I’m kind of a newb myself with spinning but I wish it was introduced earlier as I now prefer static too much 🙂

That doesn’t sound like a good experience at all. I see a registered acupuncturist every 6-8 weeks now. I certainly thought it was a waste of my time at first. One of my specialists had suggested it and she is amazing so I decided to listen. At first, I had to go weekly to get my headaches under control but as I mentioned, I now go every 6-8 weeks. We start by talking about my issues since my last visit and she goes from there. Anything I have ever asked her to work on (including my tight hamstrings) she has been more than happy to help me with. Sometimes she will do a different area and explain how it will help another. I also love cupping, it’s probably my favorite part. She never tries to “diagnose” me, nor would I want her to. It’s interesting because she told me once that someone had come in with something and she told them to go to theat emergency room immediately. She realizes what needs medical attention and what is something that she can help with.

Any who, I defiantly think that this guy shouldn’t be in business. Check out reviews online if you decide to see someone else, or maybe ask some friends/coworkers if they have any great places they know of.

I take private classes. the first lesson they saw what I was already able to do. From there I told them what my goals were. We built a plan on how to get to those goals, what moves I needed to learn. overall I found that I advanced quickly with private instruction. If you are doing one on one I feel like you should give the person an idea of what your goals are too so they know what directions to take you 🙂 I hope tomorrow goes well 🙂

Mmm I have a chrome xpole and no bolts are sticking out. Have you tried to tighten them lately? I know sometimes mine come slightly undone so I frequently check on them but it should be quite smooth with no slicing. How long have you been doing pole? I found with grips that I have a preference. I have learned all grips but I personally love split grip. Sounds like you might need a bit more time building up muscle memory? Strength is important but so is muscle memory 🙂 I’m sure you will nail it soon!

I was in the same boat with developing very quickly. If I could go back in time I would have gone slower and enjoyed more of the journey. Ayesha was a tricky one for me – I don’t have the best balance. Now I’m working on elbow grip ayesha and it seems so far away. what clicked for me when it came to ayesha was engaging my oblique and making sure that my hips are even. The inverted D is a great stepping stone for it as well.

good luck and hopefully you will get it soon 🙂

I have MG gloves. I found them helpful when I was having a really slippery day.I don’t use them often but sometimes u like to use them when I’m learning a new move until I have gained some muscle memory. I thought they were quite inexpensive and keep them with me anytime I pole just in case I want to try something with them on 🙂

@michellepange I tried different types of yoga pants. One pair was an epic fail but one pair I love on my silicone (same experience with shits and i have a sweet scar on my sholder back to show for it). I like to layer or have different clothes during my session To change. Since I have figured out what works well for me, I started planning what pants for what moves. Lol it took me about a month to get really comfortable with silicone and clothes.

@ambience24z9338 I ordered directly from xpole. I have never tried a sleeve so I may be a little biased but overall I am extremely happy with my silicone pole 🙂

@ItsEss – when I puchased my silicone, I had it up for about a month before I put up my chrome again. In terms of strength and learning new moves I personally find it extremely beneficial because I don’t have to worry about my hands and I can just focus on my new move. I think my learning process would have been longer on the chrome for some moves. Switching back and forth isn’t much of an issue for me in terms of the poles but I also take private lessons on brass poles (which I personally don’t like) so I am always using different piles. I don’t think I would like just having a silicone pole by itself though, some moves are just not as comfortable on the silicone (ie. Left side Scorpio push out to ayesha) but I can do it on my chrome. But I am just learning superman to shoulder mount trap split which seemed really hard on chrome and it’s now making sense to learn on my silicone first. Lol maybe it’s all in my head. Hope that helps!

I have a silicone Xpole. I can tell you that with the silicone you need to be careful with what your wearing, yesterday I wore a shirt that was too thin and now I have a burn on my shoulder. I love my silicone but I don’t think I would enjoy only training on that alone – I love my chrome when I need my skin to stick and my silicone when I’m first learning strength moves. Tough decision to make for sure.

March 16, 2015 at 9:12 am in reply to: Pole fears…. Strength related?

I started my journey with Veena’s lessons and decided to join a studio when I got to the inverts. I was extremely terrified of hurting myself. I have anxiety about most new moves – the worst was probably the cup grip shoulder mount. I have found with poling at home, there was a need to always be recording myself. Once I do something I watch to see what needs to be adjusted. The fears do go away 🙂

Interesting….outside of pole the majority of my friends are significantly older than I am by 20+ years. I tried to hang out with people my age and it was an epic failure. I think I was born in the wrong generation!

Head beside or in front of pole if flexibility will allow. When I was doing it and couldn’t get the hips up I had my body positioned incorrectly. Also with the inside (non swinging foot) I found it easier if it was bent when I was still standing.

Hey Trish. I had serious issues getting my hips up in the TG handspring. My issues was how I had positioned my body. when I had a private lesson, the instructor corrected my issues and boom I had it no problem. do you gave your body positioned in front of or directly beside the pole when starting? Bottom elbow bent? Keep top twisted arm a little lower (lower than I would have it from inverted Tg ayesha) when you swing the leg make sure the bottom arm extends. hopefully some of those tips help you. But please do be careful! As Veena said you can really hurt yourself. It probably took me like 7-8 weeks to finally get it.
