Ohhhh….good stuff ! Thanks ! Does it slip out of place at all ? My garage is poured & polished concrete…very very slippery – and one of the main reasons ive hardly poled at home since Dad helped build a ceiling brace for my Christmas present last year 🙁
I suppose I could get a few sheets of the flooring and expand my area to the corner…Ive got a 6×6 square in the middle of the garage right now…or put some rug grip strips under it. Also did you put the pole on top of it or cut a hole in the center ?

I’m banished to the garage as well… my husband is convinced my x-pole will wreck the textured ceilings and the only room we don’t have a ceiling fan in the living room….and even then between furniture and kids I doubt I’d get much accomplished…. but that’s another discussion. LOL

What I did to cover the ugly unfinished walls was to get king sized flat sheets from Goodwill and yard sales (If youre really a perfectionist – which i wish i had the time to be you could buy light colors and dye them all to match) and staple them into the beams. I have found some mirrors (again goodwill/yard sales) that I’ve just propped up with the intentions of hanging once I do some insulation (Ohio = cold). When my local church does their Christmas rummage (noticing a theme here ? LOL) I want some lights to wrap around the rafters.

Floorwise – I have those snap togethermats but they do catch my toes and shoes are iimpossible. Nice for stretching though. Looking into other things…thought about just sweeping and moping really well but since I share my space with the lawn mower, all the kids bikes & junk it wouldn’t stay dirt free for long at all….I don’t want to do a rug because it will slip…don’t want to stick that plastic tile down…though about sticking tiles to a piece of sheet rock and getting my dad to drill it into the floor in a few places to keep it from shifting which could easily be fixed when we sell with a quick skim of concrete filler.

I’ll try to post some pictures later…. its delightfully tacky and pretty half assed but its still better than no pole at all !

Do you have a local YMCA? I pay $75/month for the family (but it could be less depending on income) and they offer 6 free training sessions plus have trainers available if you need help. My Y has some awesome Yoga classes which have really improved my flexibility and balance. There is also a program that the Y calls “Move 2 Loose”…basically its 2 sessions a week for 12 weeks in a group-x environment. …it costs about $150 depending on your location and if youre a Y member or not. Its not one on one but it gives me accountability because my self motivation is crap and still allows me money to budget for pole stuff. Might be another option to look in to….

    🙂

Sorry to get a bit long winded in my post….forgot to mention Etsy. It is like eBay but for all hand made items (you won’t find computer parts or potato chips shaped like the Virgin Mary like you do on EBay)

Regarding eBay safety – always shop sellers with high ratings and positive feedback. PayPal is very secure and to take it one step further use a credit card not a debit card or bank account information. That way in the highly UNLIKELY event your card information gets compromised you have the protection of your bank’s fraud policies. When I get a minute I’ll try to message you some more sites that might be helpful or at least provide some corset eye candy…..and all this corset talk is making me stare longingly at my patterns and fabric stash…..*sigh*

Good Luck and lets us know how you get on!

To avoid a lengthy post I think my best advice is to do what YOU want….I don’t think anyone was insinuating that getting a custom made corset would be your only or even best option based on many considerations. Budget often being the big one. Having a custom corset is definitely a luxury and perhaps it is on your list of “some day when I can afford it” dreams. I completely understand where you are coming from in terms of finances – I stay at home with our 3 kids, my husband took a 30% pay CUT and his ex wife managed to get her child support raised so its not even in our budget to buy materials for me to make my own corsets if I wanted to. I’m collecting old prom dresses from yard sales to make my girls mermaids for Halloween but is actually been a fun hunt….anyways I’m getting off topic…

Not all corsets are designed to be “tight laced” and while there are a few people who go to that extreme most of us don’t – as there are the obvious health dangers involved. You always hear the stories on how uncomfortable corsets are, how restrictive, how this how that…bad bad bad but in my experience those come from corsets that are not properly fitted. I can wear mine all day and be more comfortable in them than I am in a bra. I’m not saying a pre-made corset can not fit well since there are so many styles and different options available but it really can be trial and error – especially with internet shopping. Check the return policies and their measurement guides. Normally corsets are bought small to accommodate a modest 2-3 inch reduction…for example if you are a 34″ bust – order a 30″. But there are some companies that take that into account already so be sure to double check what they recommended based on your measurements. It depends on what style you are looking for but you mentioned being short waisted- some of the “long line” corsets that are designed to extend over the hips might be too long…..If in doubt shoot an email to the customer service department for some guidance and if you don’t like their response or don’t feel comfortable with them its simple – don’t do businesses with them.

I think what we were all trying to say is that if you could, a custom corset would really be the way to go….too many times we have seen people try to save a bit of money up front by ordering something then wishing they had just waited it out and paid the extra for a custom. We all know what joy a proper corset can be and would hate to see anyone soured on that from a bad experience.

In a nut shell it sounds like you know what you want and are willing to do your home work. Keep in mind that a lot of cheap costume corsets made of plastic will be popping up near Halloween- not that there is anything wrong with those. (I have one and although its not as supportive and well fitted as my others it served its purpose to have feathers and sequins stuck to it as part of a costume)

Above all, like I said to begin with, be happy with whatever choice you make.

As another corset maker I’m not going to repeat what the other two ladies have already said….but you might have more luck looking on Corset Story than on eBay. As far as online purchases go – eBay and PayPal are very secure…I buy and sell a few times a year with no problems. Also – If you have a Citi Bank credit card they can provide you with a one time use “ghost” card number for online shopping so you’re not even using your real card number.

Exactly what Veena & Mindy said….I kept going to beginner pole classes up until about 34 weeks then took ballet conditioning classes until about 36 with baby #2….I didn’t try anything new and modified when I needed too (not rolling on to my stomach, limited floor work on my back, etc). I was lucky that my instructor and the other lady (it was a SMALL daytime class) were Moms so we all had a good laugh and renamed some moves after I said I looked like a turtle stuck on its back one day!

By keeping active with this last pregnancy I kept my weight gain to a healthy 28 lbs and not the 75lbs I gained with my son. The difference in L&D was insane. Miserable, epidural & threatened with a C-section with the first vs. a very quick, easy, water birth with the second. My recovery time was much quicker too….I was discharged at 24 hours, at the mall the next day and back at the studio taking silks and pole about 4 weeks after she was born.

I really look forward to poling thru the next pregnancy, when ever that happens….with all the other challenges a pregnancy can sometimes present I see no reason to give up something that makes you feel good and keeps you in shape both mentally and physically which can prevent SO many things that get “solved” with drugs…but I can feel myself going off on my “pregnancy in America” rant so I’ll just stop here 😛

Good luck to you and congratulations to you & your family!

The Floorwork DVD is just plain HOT! Can’t wait to have an hour to myself to work on it (yay kids on summer vacation!!!!). I really like how there is no pole involved at all – since my pole is in my garage – with no air conditioning and temps in the high 90s I start melting just thinking about going out there.

For those of you that aren’t fans of the music – turn on the closed captions feature on your DVD player then mute it. You’d have to read while stretching but just a thought. The music isn’t my favorite but its growing on me….

Reading all these posts makes me think of the demographic of my studio…mostly mid/late 20’s & up….professional, educated, middle class ladies. A lot of Moms and even a few grandmas….so much for the stigma that all pole dancers are dumb, trashy wannabe strippers or young girls wanting attention in bars…..

Proud to be part of such a strong, educated, supportive community…..

    IM PROUD TO POLE!

Laundry and dishes….aka Full Time Mom…LOL. I dabble as a seamstress – costumes, custom corsetry and specializing in 18th century reproduction clothing. I also teach pole conditioning classes, supervise open studio time and sub here and there for other instructors.

But I went to school for esthetics, worked as a make-up artist, flight attendant, had kid one, went back to working in salon then opened my own salon, became a single mom, worked as a production manager/ pharmacy tech for a long-term care pharmacy then moved and went into medical billing…got remarried and now happily stay at home doing a little bit of everything.

Mine is in my garage…but I have electricity out there. I have a little heater in the winter but it is still really too cold to be out there in anything below about 50 F because not only is it too cold to be wearing next to nothing but the pole is slick and its just not safe….I have a concerete floor, which you probably do too –  not friendly on the knees or very forgiving for slip up when learning. I am looking to get some 1/2" foam floor tiles (the kind often used in kiddie play rooms). Whatever you do always make sure safety is your first priority 🙂

Thats where I am…I was thinking to order a new pair then do some reinforcing stiches in a "X"  pattern across the width of the top strip (which seems to take the most beating)….Or perhaps I can experiment with using some strips of one of the kids old rain coats to replace it….also tempeted to just cut off the top portion and deal with bruised shins. LOL…I'll see what I can mess about with this weekend and update everyone interested 🙂

You're always too stinking cute when we pole Luvlee 🙂 I've looked at the Mika stuff you sent me on FaceBook….freaking adorable ! But I'm afraid its all too small and a bit on the expensive side for the time being.

I get so angry that there just doesn't seem to be much in "plus" sizes !  I'm not exactly big either !  A happy, healthy 8/10 pants and 34DDD/36DD. For you other ladies who are in my big bobbie boat – I found a good sports bra at Target (but that was over the summer and I'm sure they have changed out styles since then. Boo). I prefer A LOT of support and coverage….everything I've found isnt much fun – but hey ! thats what glue guns and rhinestones are for  right ?!

As far as bottoms – I found that WalMart (of all places) has a 2 pack of boyshorts in fun colors and stripes that dont ride up or fall down….I like to wear something under the, but thats just me. They are under $10 and I know Target has similar stuff too. I also like jogging skorts for a little bit of girly flirty fun with tushy coverage. (Swim skirt bottoms work well – Target).

Discountdance.com has some nice leotards that I want to try – I'm weird about having my jiggley little tummy covered (thanks kids ! LOL) and get distracted when I'm constantly pulling my shirt down or tucking myself back in.

I guess some more quality bonding time with my sewing machine is in my near furture 🙂
