Foxy…I read this post earlier and decided to hold off on my response so I could think a bit…here is what I recommend from my own experience.
The catapillar climb is a great conditioning exercise…this took me a while to get. This move gives you an opportunity to try different grips (split, elbow and forearm) to see which you prefer. I personally do the catapillar climb using the elbow grip. If you can’t quit get the "climb", can you just do a catapillar??
second, the extended butterfly is perfect for any kind of split grip moves (cartwheel mt, straight edge..etc). This is the move that I actually had to have down before attempting any of the others. You build the strength in your arms while still maintaining a pt of contact with your ankle. Then when you feel comfortable you can move on to doing the straight edge from it.
Deirdre has a great suggestion as using the floor before going aerial. I actually used this quite a bit…esp when I was learning how to do a brass monkey.
You already have the right idea on practicing hand stands…great strength builder for the arms plus you get more aclimated to being inverted with total support in the arms.
Good luck and I can’t wait to see your progress!

Charley…I actually have been self taught for the most part. The studio that I go to was mainly for the "open pole" sessions so I could mess around on her 14ft poles. After a couple weeks of me going up there, the owner asked me to come teach for her. I teach my first class this coming sunday. I will be teaching a couple of intermediate and advanced classes!! I am so excited. I get my keys to the studio and my "instructor" shirts tomorrow!! YAY!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
I think this will be a great opportunity to watch how she runs her business and to "perfect" my teaching style along with seeing the ins and outs of owning a studio.

So here is another update! My superman is getting much much better…I can do it now with out making the "omg this hurts…constipated" face!
I also managed to do like half a dozen knee holds with actually letting go. I held one for almost 20 sec!!:) I figured out that I was having issues with my footplacement…once I corrected it…BAM!
Thanks everyone for the tips and if my pole and I decide to get along tonight I will try to make a vid!!
Happy poling! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

This was announced last year (2008) and I haven’t seen anything since. The pic is def photoshopped. That remote is HUGE! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif I highly doubt that this will ever come to light…and I would be kinda glad if it dosen’t (esp under Peek-a-boo) just because it would probably come across as a joke and making fun of those that pole!

YAY!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif Congrats! It always seems like beautiful days bring out the best on the pole!!

Everyone progresses at different rates…and yes it can be frustrating for those who have been at it for longer. But I can totally understand your post (Poledork & Foxy). I wouldn’t say that I progressed as quickly as you ladies did…but once I got my pregnancy weight gone and I could focus on pole tricks..things just seem to naturally come to me. I do have gymnastics and figure skating background (possible advantage). I just started teaching a couple tricks classes at a local studio and the girls were shocked when I told them that I’ve only been seriously poling for maybe 7 mths (I’ve had my pole a year though). The only disadvantage that I’ve seen is that there are some fast progressing polers out there that get these difficult moves real early on and they just want to add more tricks to their check list…but their technique can be sloppy and sometimes dangerous and they don’t try to "polish" their moves…That being said…I haven’t seen anyone on here that I would group like that. I think this kind of community supports fast and slow learners and teaches us to continually improve our skills. You ladies are doing great! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Great progress girl! The falling angel (I call a cross knee release) took me forever to get down….I had the concept of what my body was supposed to do…but I couldn’t get over the pain! Keep up the great work!

Welcome to the site! No need to say it because everyone else has…but def go with the x-pole…you won’t be sorry!

I have pole dance dreams all of the time..sometimes dancing on a stage at a club..but most of the time my dreams are replaying my recent practice sessions and why I couldn’t get a move. A lot of times I have the "I got it!" light bulb and my following practice I nail the move. It’s like I learn from my mistakes while dreaming…at least most of the time! Usually in my dreams I am WAY more flexible than what I am! And when I wake up I could swear that I could do a straddle all the way down…but it dosen’t work out that well! hehe! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I do tend to daydream a lot about pole! I’ve even caught myself in mid conversation and totally missed what the other person was saying…
I think this is just another sign of addiction!:)

I do the shouldermount dismount too for core strength…but I don’t know if I would be doing them before being able to do a shouldermount! Someone correct me if I’m wrong…but usually the sm dismount is taught after the sm is learned. I found that doing the sm first allowed me to understand where my body was so then when I started doing the sm dsmt I already had the body memory down. Have you already been able to do a sm dismount? I was totally freaked out by the dismount the first time I tried it…and I had been doing sm for a few mths already…more power to ya! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

hehehe…I’m flattered V! That was my split grip vid. Glitter this is a great way of learning how to invert/chopper up on the pole! My aerial invert/chopper has become much smoother since I started doing this! I started with the "roll up" and then progressed onto the "V"…which I can honestly say is still pretty hard! I watched my vid and it looks like it was a heck of a lot easier than what it felt like!

Neke…I bought my x-pole off of ebay and it was legit! Two things that I would consider 1. do they have a return policy?? 2. Look at the seller rating. There are two definite signs that it is a legite x-pole (clear/whitish rubberised ring around the top of the dome and on the base there is a scribed "X". If these two things are missing from the pole, then you could return it. Good luck!

Thank you so much Rouge and Charley! I will definitly be pming you in time! We are currently working on a 5 yr model and you both have mentioned things that we have already discussed (financial, equipment etc). We are both very business oriented people and this is something that we are seriously discussing. We even met with our attorney last week (for a different matter) and briefly discussed the legal issues with him. I have met numerous people (at work, on the street…) who have already asked me about doing lessons. There are even some girls at the studio that I go to that have asked about private lessons. I just feel wierd about doing them at someone elses studio. I am going to talk with my insurance and attorney to see what ramifications there may be for doing some in my home studio (my garage..hehehe:)). You ladies are a wealth of knowledge and I am busting at the seams with questions and ideas. Once I get further along with our bp I will be asking away! Thanks so much ladies! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Yay! Neke!
I have my pole in the garage with a rug underneath. It sucks but it does the job! If I could afford it, I would have a dance floor put in mine.

Thanks everyone on your ideas. They are pretty much in line with what I’ve been thinking about doing. I like the idea of offering both sensual pole and fitness pole along with chair and burlesque. I’m not a fan of doing traveling parties..but studio parties could be a possibility. A pole strength training class is a definite. Safety is a huge concern so I’ve been researching certification/licensing courses that cover this.
I appreciate everyones input! Thanks! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
