to cut or not, what a dilemma.
I’m not the tiniest, yet I’m lucky to have finally got over my body image. Being late 30’s and having a husband who thinks I’m beautiful no matter what size I am has made a huge difference.

    I’ve yoyo’d form 50kg – 120kg, at 5’9 that’s going from skeletal Angelina to big Kirtsy Alley.
There are a couple of things I’d happily change, but they don’t bug me, and they are….
If my boobs get over an F cup, then I go on the waiting list for a reduction.
And before you all go, no that’s fat gain, every time I shrink, I gain cup size and it stays, already at an E.
Ergo no running for me! I’d also love them to be perky, but no, they can show me where my toes are when I stand up.
and I can see what a facelift would do, but there’s no way that’s ever happening. Not when I still get ID’d for alcohol (at nearly 38 I’m pretty happy about that! Esp when legal age is 18)

However, these aren’t important things. I also have a puku*, which like Veena, sticks out over my yoga pants, which is bad as my parents both have / had CVD.

Pole has helped me lose weight (20kg to date over 18 months), and I totally agree with Veena that slow and steady via good nutrition and exercise is the way to go. Surgery is the quick option, but does it address bad habits?? Fix that nasty sugar addiction? Address the body image psychological issues you actually need to address? Our society is addicted to the quick fix, but that doesn’t break habits.
Surgery has it’s place, but ensure you’ve done everything else you can first.

however, as I’m now working at Ministry of Health, the fat over the lower abs is there to protect your uterus and other reproductive organs. Therefore, if it doesn’t shift, there’s a deep-seated biological reason for this!
and if anyone wants any boob flesh, I have far more than I need, to spare!!!

*tummy. the bit that hangs over, the muffin top etc. Maori for tummy. Gotta get te reo into the site somehow!

right, I’m grumpy, tired, freezing cold and have had a pretty insane week. More on that later….
therefore, punches will not be pulled and apologies if toes get trodden on but I have size 11 feet.

Glitter sweetie, the only mental challenge you have right now is your body image.
address that and you will find pole much easier to deal with.

When I have a fat day ( or 2, 3, weeks on end, eternity…) pole is dreadful, I can’t even do a fireman.
When I’m feeling good about who I am and my looks mean nothing, it all comes together neatly.

So yes, it is in the mind, but not quite the part where you thought it was.

And as an amazing dancer I know, Polly, said to me (which did blow me away), she loved watching me dance because I had grace and flow and a lack of self consciousness. She wished she could do what I could.
OMG, you should see how she dances. Jawdropping grace and strength, oozing sexiness.
And that is pretty much how we see your dancing, graceful, strong and sexy.

Go see a Doctor, the pain shouldn’t be there after this long.
Women have been known to dislocate ribs inverting, that is why we try to put it off until you are strong enough.

So, go see Doctor and leave inverting for crazy folk like Veena and Fleur and Berty and Glitz and Sascha and all the others who do it strongly and safely.

Come, join those of us who refuse to invert.

    Hee hee.
Girls I know who’ve gone to A&E / the ER, even their Doctor have had the nurses sit down and seriously ask if they were ok, were they really ok, are you being abused etc, did they need some help for the bruising: you know, the concerned medical professional and the badly bruised patient routine…

Then when they find out it’s pole related, the staff can’t help but laugh. We’ve got a few nurses that way.

+ 1 for Mac. IMovie, Final cut. Just works, every time!

if using a windows machine, dump Movie maker, it sucks.
Drops out frames, never behaves and really shouldn’t be on the market except Microsoft decided they wanted something to rival iMovie.

Google and download sony vegas, free. If you like it, get the cheap $60 version.

"I want to do a basic invert. Or that move were u hold the pole and kick up and grab on. dont know the name"
If I had a dollare for every time I’ve heard that… inverting’s for crazy folk I tell ya!!!

Leave inverts for a while until you have the strength, flinging your self up there is not worth the end result (sprained toes, dislocated ribs etc). Also when you try to do mid air inverts, you won’t have strength or anything to fling off, so start basic and let it all happen when you’re actually ready.

Start with basics: fireman, cross leg spin, martini / mermaid, front and back hooks (Goddess), hurkey / sun wheel, princess, Chair, transitions, pirouettes, poses, walking….. that’s 6 lessons worth of moves for you!

Can you tell I’ve been teaching today????

    Olive oil and rock salt.
rub the two into your hands, then rinse off and apply good moisturiser.

calluses are there for as long as you pole.

being lazy here, but I’ve posted at least twice on how to improve pole sits.
laziness is due to the fact that I can’t remember where. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

    Anyway….

Sit on the pole, sit there for 15 seconds. it will hurt.
get off the pole. fan your thighs like a crazy lady to stop the burn.
then get back up there and try for 30 seconds.
    repeat step two.
increase in 15 second increments until you have the sit mastered.

When 30 seconds is really easy, start at 45 seconds.
Do this everyday and before you now it, sitting will be second nature.
    Work up to 5 minutes.

Don’t push it, let pole happen as it will.

dump windows movie maker (do I sound like a broken record yet?)

If you’re using a windows machine, google and download the free version of vegas.
If you like it, spring the $60ish US dollars for the basic version.

No more shite movie maker. Simple as that!

    Or, get a Mac. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

In the 50’s and 60’s my mum used to use coke to clean chrome on her boyfirends car.
Apparently it was the best thing ever for cleaning it.
So you could have an ultra shiny / sticky chrome pole!

I’ve used it to remove rust and corrosion!

Right Missy!! You sit down right there and get lectured by Aunty Rouge.

You’ve seen my wedding photo’s on Faceplant, so you know I’m not a stick.
There’s enough of us who pole who aren’t skinny minnies and some of us do really well despite having that extra layer of cushioning.

So, get it out of your head that it’s being a fatty that’s holding you back.
Anyway, how many dancers would kill to have your flow and grace?

I agree that you should perhaps check out a couple of schools and get some casual tuition to see if it’s a technique thing, it may be a case of moving yourself slightly to get it working well.

So missy, get that "fat old me" though pattern out of your brain and focus on technique.
OK?!? My jandal* will reach all the way from New Zealand and I’m not afraid to use it!!

xpole is the way to go and I don[‘t think you’ll be unhappy with it.
We took our xpoles (2) down last weekend for a film shoot and the entire, up and down took maybe 15 minutes max per pole.

after 18 months and teaching for about a year, I’ve finally started inverting, albeit via laybacks.
Don’t rush to get into inverting. get the basics down and really well before trying to invert.

Abs need to be really strong, for inverting, you need to get your hips above your head.

Take your time and get your techinque right first, it doens’t mean you’re a bad dancer, but it may mean better strength gain and less injuries.

many self-taught people have technique that a couple of lessons in a studio can correct.
It only takes one shoulder impingement or one tight shoulder capsule, to learn how to use them better.
This is from experience and now I know better than to hang off the pole without engaging my abs, lats and traps.
and to not stretch shoulders with my elbow above the shoulder… (30, 60 or 90 degrees from the body only!)

Jamilla is surprisingly petite as well. She’s something like 5’2 a

If that, probably more like 5′ even, she’s shorter than my sister who’s 5’2"!
She’s up to about my chin…

but then Jamilla’s lifts are so strong that when she pulls up into an invert, she gets her hips up higher, making her seem so much taller, and then there’s the pointed toes thing too…

dumb question: have you tried exfoliating your calluses?
It may remove the hard edge. I pumice mine monthly and use the MAC facial scrub weekly when doing my face.
This seems to have inhibited calluses and my hands are still pretty soft. In turn, this may help blisters,

For sweat, it depends on how bad the problem is.
My first instinct would be to use Mitchum etc then wash that off just prior to poling (use good soap).
If really bad, go see your Doctor, botox in the armpit can remove the sweat problem. It’s how schelebs stop sweating at the Oscars etc.

PVC gloves are great for spinning poles, but stop spinning on static poles. Ditto for rosin, which can be purchased from any musical instrument shop.

May 15, 2009 at 9:33 am in reply to: Sore Muscles

the next day after my first few lessons, I hurt, but nowhere near as bad as two days after.
It’s totally natural to hurt, you will have a build up of lactic acid and you’re pushing muscles that may not have been used that way for a long time, if ever as was my case.

Personally, I’m working on strength, holding my weight, There’s a bit of me to hold up, and being in a handstand (cheat version, butt against pole and bringing legs up that way) sure is working the pecs, shoulders, lats and traps. But I know that this will go in two days… or 3
And I’m retraining my abs. They were taught opera singing support, ergo, puku* out is fine for support, now I need to teach them the opposite way. That is now hurting. Lots. But good hurt. again, 2 – 3 days they’ll be fine.
As Veena has said, epsom salts, or bathe in baking soda.
Also stretch the freak out of them to get the lactic acid out. It’s all I did to help it move.

Don’t work the same muscles 2 days in a row. Tomorrow (Sat) is my big day: Bollywood (serious ab, oblique and hip work), a private newb lesson (all over work), then another class of beginners / intro. On top of that I’ll try to get an hour or so of personal training. Crazy day, but it’s Saturday and I part-own the place, so no choice.

Sunday, I’m going to hurt. My obliques, transverse abs, abs and butt will ache from Bollywood; shoulders etc from pole and all I’ll want to do is sleep. So it’ll be markets for weights using different muscles by carrying shopping bags.

Hope that helps! Pain is natural and will go.

    * puku, Maori for tummy (pr: pookoo)

    Hey,
I’ve bought shoes and costumes from http://howcool.com/catalog before – even with the insane shipping prices to Australia, they are still cheaper than anywhere else I’ve found that delivers here and they have everything. I used to find what I wanted on the Pleaser website and then order it from howcool. They would usually arrive in about a week, but they were coming a very long way – I think they send them out as soon as you place the order.
Free shipping for the US too.
    +1

we recommend it to all our girls too.

About bloody time!! With talent like that, you should share!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif

Self consciousness is natural when in front of classes, especially for the first few times.
You’ll be fine. Students are more concerned with what you’re trying to teach them, than what you look like!
The looks of: you want me to do whaaaaat?? is funny.

remember, you have control and anyone who focuses on anything but class, make them pole sit.
You can do stuff they can’t and that’s where your power will lie.
In all honesty, none of our students notice anything about anyone else as they’re all trying hard not to fall off the pole or get that particular move nailed.
