Thanks gingercake, that's good to know. The song is on high rotate in my car at the moment, I am a little concerned I'll hate it by comp. time! but, oh, well..
I hope to have my routine finished soon, so a month to practise would be good then? I think i need to practice and practice because I don;t want to be nervous about any of it and slip!
-
Selene what problem are you having with your CKR and CAR? Are you slipping? Or have you just lost your nerve to lay back? There is no reason why you should really have problems with these moves that would be weight related. I do know that it does require a lot of nerve to let go and lay back on both of those and you can get nervous and sweat which doesn't help the ability to grip, The best way may be to have someone 'spot' you on these two – someone who can comfortably take your weight, obviously making sure you have a good solid grip before you let go.

@poleskivvies thank you for those great links and thanks everyone for your choreographing ideas. I am putting together my first routine for a compeitiion at the moment. so far so good – my greatest fear is being boring and predictable, I am trying for my own flavour and these tips have been a great help! My second fear is being under-rehearsed. How soon before a compeitiion do you suggest I have the routine completed so I can practise, practise, practise?

@Empyrean
Yes the article is a satire – but read some of the earlier comments on the article, they are awful!
-
@Shanghaililly I have had that before with cross ankle release. Quite painful and bruised, no scabs thankfully! I have to remember not to drop down into this too quickly, to do it with some control and also to flex my butt muscles and thighs very strongly which seems to give some protection to the tailbone area as your glutes tend to take the impact. I hope you know what I mean!

I usually strength train at least twice a week, pole twice a week, need to fit more cardio in, but currently include that with my ST, stretching/core class once a week. Trying to fit a 3rd pole session in now….
-
I agree with what @charley has said – using dance as a form of religious expression enables them to feel okay about what they are doing. The comments in that article link you posted @mrsbaybeegurl just about made me scream with frustration some of them were so bigoted – I couldn't read anymore. At least these women are feeling okay, no matter how strange the justification seems to us!

MemberMarch 22, 2011 at 1:57 pm in reply to: Aysha…split grip vs. forearm grip vs. elbow grip@Cinara – I will have a look at your pic, because I can't do anything else from the twisted grip – not that I ahve tried – my instructor left for Australia (permanently) on the weekend https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif so maybe I should wait till my new instructor comes…my forearms tend to 'harden' up quite a bit – although regular massage has made them better – but I don't want an injury so will be careful….Thanks for caring!
@shellectra – The jacknife from the elbow grip is the only way I know how to do it yet. I suppose from the split grip it's the same, but its just a matter of sending your hips in the opposite direction from where you send your legs just so you keep your balance…Fun!

MemberMarch 22, 2011 at 3:38 am in reply to: Aysha…split grip vs. forearm grip vs. elbow gripI have only ever used the elbow grip – forearm grip is probably easier but far less comfortable for me. The elbow grip is nice and solid -straight edge, v and jackknife are fine. We are 50/50 in my class elbow and forearm – funny how everyone's anatomy is different and one is more confortable/easier. The split grip aysha eludes me – might check out Cinaras twisted grip…!

I would just like to second those girls who have said that they are not naturals but have found their own strengths. It took me literally months to get an invert – it so didn;t come naturally to me, and there have been other moves that have driven me almost to tears. I have no dance background and almost without exception the girls in my recent classes have been tiny graceful dancy things. However, I have boxed on, and now there are a few moves – strength hold moves that are easier for me and not so for the other girls in my class. I am working more on these moves that I am good at and enjoy and although trying to slowly master some of the other moves I find more difficult I am now enjoying the fact that there are types of pole moves that I can do better than others. You will find your strength and your own flavour on the pole. I know it is hard when you have a friend that is better – luckily the other girls in my class are heaps younger than me, so in my mind I could use the fact that I was a bit older to stop me comparing – not using that as an excuse – just a reason – but now I am feeling better and better about the pole. It's a really difficult sport – a great way to feel better is invite one of your non-pole friends to have a go with you – they'll be lousy and you'll look great!!

Hi there,
I too have gloves, they need to be extremely snug fitting to work it seemed. I had the smallest size and altough the gloves stuck to the pole, my hands slid inside them so they didn't work for me – but if you could get them tight enough they could be okay. A year further on, I find i don't need too much help with grip – just a bit if gym chalk or mighty grip – altough tite grip was a real favourite when I was a beginner. Funny story; in my beginners classes one girl used to bring kitchen rubber gloves to grip with! Bright yellow!

Your posts always make me smile 'pole twin'!
Split grip has always been a challenge for me too – I now believe it's because my head doesn't focus on the correct pressures between each hand – for example, when trying the split grip mount or half handspring or whatever it's called (!) I had too much weight on my bottom hand – I struggle to share the love between my hands! I think it's the same problem with my superman too. I am strong, so I know it's not a strength issue, it's just a brain issue! so, unfortunately I think these type of problems are just a matter of continuing to practice so you imprint the correct technique in your brain! It seems like forever at the time, but when i think back to a year ago and I couldn't even do an invert consistently and how far I've come – the frustrating thing with pole is that gains are often slow and therefore seem unsatisfying, however, fast forward a month and look back and I bet you have made some progress that you are happy with – it's just hard to notice at the time!

So, i am sure I would be best served to find something old and obscure – unfortunately the song I like is very current – Cee Lo Green – Bigger City – so, hmmm, not sure how that will go! I get heartily sick of the songs I have learnt routines too – not because they are bad songs – but because I have danced a routine to it more times than I care to remember – particular non-favourites are: Beyonce, Beautiful Liar and Pink, Cos I Can….

@sassafrassle; I'll have to check it out. Are you going to MPDNZ? How is Maree getting on? I suppose she must be gettting a little nervous!? I'll flick her an email this week..
well, that was a great bit of you tube viewing! Michelle Mynx is FANTASTIC polephile! A unique style. it's my favourite when dancers really add their unique take.
-
@madfelice – really? that would be amazing! Are you in sydney? I am going to hopefully come over in July to see Rafaela at the x-pole show. I know we could get so many more of the pole stars to this part of the world if we could organise workshops and things for them. I would love to do it, but I struggle with the time to run my businesses, my blog and my family commitments let alone my other volunteer work. I am sure there must be a business opportunity for someone to organise these. Need to put my thinking cap on!
-
@Madfelice. i think Badazz is fantastic as well. He certainly has a distinct style which I really admire, I love the way he makespole his own. @helthalynne. I will youtube Barbara Dial – I have never seen her. It is great to get a list going of performers to look up! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I'll update this post when I have got it – may be a while – but i'll try the head banging technique..

MemberMarch 3, 2011 at 4:16 pm in reply to: Do you have a move that you’ve had to just throw in the towel on?Thought I would update you on my progress here. @Chemgoddess – your advice totally worked! That bottom hand sliding down the pole was the answer – I finally managed that split grip mount or half handspring or whatever it's called. After months and months of trying! I realised after you said the above that I was keeping my bottom hand really solid – well there was no need, because my 'cheat' way was pretty much a one handed invert anyway, I didn't need any power in my bottom arm. So I just kept my bottom hand slidey and sort of used it as a guide and let it move down as needed. the move is far from perfect yet, but I can't believe after sooo long trying that I have finally got it! Thank you so much!
*Now for that superman…*

This is a great thread and thanks Veena for the video. I watch too many you tube videos of everyones amazing things and it makes you start to feel a bit ho hum – a great reminder from you that everyone makes mistakes! I was doing a spinning move on a static pole that all of a sudden lost it's static and went into spin mode and launched me seriously onto my backside a couple of metres away. Bruised bottom and pride, but no long term damage!

Oh, and just as an addition to that post, she would really like the book to be released in paperback. It is good to hear that is is cheaper at b and n than at amazon. It is v expensive which she says is disturbingly typical of academic books. So, if you can't find it, or don't want to pay the price, get in touch with the publisher, palgrave mcmillan, and ask them to hurry up and publish it in paperback! I have..

After hearing about this book on this site, I got in touch with the author. I just published an interview with her and an excerpt of the book on my blog; http://www.polefitfanatics.com/2011/02/pole-dancing-empowerment-and-embodiment/
She was sooo lovely. I recommend the book…https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

MemberFebruary 24, 2011 at 7:24 pm in reply to: Do you have a move that you’ve had to just throw in the towel on?Wow, that was a hard ask getting a photo – I couldn't find one! However, here is an old photo of me doing a butterfly – the mount into this is a split grip, like my hands are in the photo. Except your bottom hand slides down a little further once you have hooked your outside leg on and you push up into a butterfly. My problem has been that I have never been able to get up from a split grip and get my outside foot on – at least I can get my foot on but I can't get my calf on which is what i really need to do – then you push up with your bottom hand into the butterfly. You guys might know another name for this. Anyway, like I said, i cheat by inverting and then as I come up letting go with one arm and putting it down into the split grip. Wow, is that confusing or what!!
