Haha, reminds me of when I was at a bar a month or so ago and they had a pole near the dance floor that anyone could jump on to dance. My friends were like "We so have to get you drunk enough that you get on that thing!" and I was like "Nooo if I’m getting up there it better be before I drink anything!" Haha. Especially since it was a stage pole; like mine, only steel. That would have ended bad…

Haha as a fellow stage-pole owner I know the risks we face are more than the average poler when we go down https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Luckily I’ve never fallen off my stage (my first inverts were all done with a spotter, lucky me!) but I too can’t wait for my floor-to-ceiling (not to mention spinning!) pole to arrive next week. But just think, if you can dance on that tiny stage, you can dance on anything right? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif I just put up a video of my inversions (chopper, scorpio, gemini) the other day if you want to see how I get out of all of those on the stage pole.

Oh wow I am so jealous! I have always wanted to try that but out here in the middle of nowhere we don’t get cool classes like that anywhere https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif I used to know people that did aerial silk back when I did performance juggling (I hung out with a pretty cool circus type crowd https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif ) and it always looked like so much fun! Definitely let us know how that goes.

Yep, I think its probably on page.. 3 or 4 by now? It was up a few days ago =P

I like dancing in heels if I can, but with my current pole heels would make me just too tall to use it at all! Haha =P I do use them for my "sexy floor work" exercise, they add weight and a balance challenge… lol! I have a great pair of 7 1/2" heels from Highest Heel that are sooo comfortable. Leather, padded sole, with a raised area under your toes to hold your foot in place… great shoes.

My biggest problem is finding a time that’s far enough after a meal too! If I pole after eating its all bad news… So I have to be free, and either be between meals or be willing to put off the next meal. Late morning or early evening (so right before lunch and dinner respectively) seem to be my prime poling times =)

We have a similar problem around here – my state only has two studios that offer pole classes, and the one nearer to me (by near I mean an hour away!) only really teaches basic spins and the beginnings of climbing. I say the more pole studios in the world the better https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
As for your class questions, some people I talked to were thinking of one around here that would have Pole Fitness (just workout, in sneakers, all workout aspect) and then Pole Performance classes (the sexier element, dancing, high heels, costumes optional, all that). They also wanted the studio to include separate floor work/burlesque sort of classes, chair dancing or something like that, and a belly dance class; so non-pole classes, but really everything kind of "relevant" to the idea of fun and feminine workouts, as it were https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif The idea of traveling pole parties, birthday parties, etc. was never really brought up. Just ideas that we batted around. I think having classes of some kind to supplement the pole classes are a good idea. Having other classes will be a good source of income; also its good to offer something for those not brave enough for the pole yet that just maybe want to take your other classes to get stronger (or work up the courage) first!

I’m 22, will be 23 in October. I’m willing to bet I’m one of the taller ladies here… I’m 5’11" and it presents a challenge in poling, let me tell you! The amount of space I need to swing my legs around… and stand-alone poles are just not tall enough for me to grab properly haha. As of right now I weight about 140, as I recently lost 30 pounds *yay!* since last August.
I come to poling with a diverse dance background – when I was very young my mom had me in ballet, tap, figure skating, and gymnastics classes up until I was ten, when we moved states and I dropped those, instead picking up jazz and ballroom dancing. I continued these up through high school, then tried out belly dancing and musical theatre. Since high school I haven’t done much real dancing but I still practice on my own, and last year I took up regular yoga classes, which I love.
I’m not married but I am engaged. My fiance is in the Army National Guard and just got back from 8 months away at training, which was really hard on us. Right now we’re just re-settling ourselves. I myself attend college part time; I can’t attend full time due to chronic health issues. I have a brain tumor that causes seizures and other problems – don’t worry though, its stopped growing and its benign now, so I just medicate the seizures and I’m mostly ok so long as it stays put https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I do have strange masses growing in my ankles and hands now, so I have to get those biopsied soon which I’m a little nervous about but the doctor thinks they should be something fairly innocuous.
So that’s my life in a drawn-out nutshell https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Thanks everyone, I found some arnica and arnica cream at Whole Foods a few days ago and I’ve started using that. Hopefully it will help my bruises fade quicker https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I won’t be poling much for a day or two though because with warm weather comes running season and I am just too darn sore after my first run of the spring to move! Haha.

Pole dancing is becoming more accepted as a "sports" thing in my area, in fact our local news channel just did a report on it during last weeks evening news, showing a class full of women in sneakers and yoga pants learning some basic moves. When I tell my friends I’m doing it for fitness the first comments are usually pretty immature, but I have them try a couple of moves and they realize just how much work it really is.
As for presenting it to a high school, maybe if they had made it an optional after school fitness seminar, rather than having it going on for all to see? Like something they sent a flyer home about to the parents so they can decide if they want their kids to go to it? That would have made more sense to me, my school did lots of things like that, optional presentations that they advertised for a couple weeks in advance so everyone knew what was happening before it happened.

Is there a place near you that offers pre-natal yoga? One of my good friends teaches it, and its supposed to be very good for stretching, strengthening, and de-stressing (most important I think!) during your pregnancy by using the right muscles, directing blood flow, playing soothing music, everything yoga usually does but designed specifically for expecting mothers. The studios I know of have different classes designed for the different trimesters. Maybe you could look in to that?

So when I do get a spinning pole, does the fact that the static brass pole sticks to my particular skin type enough to give me hand blisters imply that I might be able to hang on to chrome pretty well? Or would I still be better served by a titanium pole to hold on while in spinning mode? I still want to do static spins without this painful sticking to my hand though. The stainless steel poles at the studio are spinning (they are Platinum Stages I believe, guessing by the fact they have a pin instead of bolts) so the instructor has let us play with that a little and I found them harder, but not impossible, to hold on to while they spin. I also do like to grab onto random poles when I see them (a couple of bars around here have poles for people to mess around on near the dance floor and stuff) and I was reading that chrome will better prepare me for whatever I might encounter in the world, correct? So maybe chrome would be good for me?
