Oh and btw I did stop following this thread, but was then tagged by someone else in another community. Literally laughing in abject horror at what is happening here and the comments being made.
The arrogance of the ignorance here, and how quickly Veena was on to discourage anyone from giving a second thought about the social implications of their costume choices means I am done with this place. As are many others in the aforementioned other community.
Enjoy guys! Laters.

If you’re going to say something to me then at least have the backbone to actually say it, rather than caveat it with a version of “I’m sorry but”.
I will continue to advocate for social awareness, especially by those I positions of social privilege. And I will continue to insist that we be mindful of how we behalf and listen first and foremost to the people groups whose culture we are taking from. I really couldn’t give a shit if that makes you, or anyone else who would rather ignore the issue, uncomfortable.
-
It’s pretty simple to know what will offend people, actually. You listen to them. If you choose to ignore the large amount of articles, blog posts, and other ways of speaking out from people of culture groups where they specifically say that white people appropriating specific elements of their culture is not okay then you’re part of the problem.
Define racism however you like. Put whatever spin on it you want to help you sleep better. Respectfully disagree as you see fit, but that doesn’t make you right, and it doesn’t stop you perpetuating the actual racism that you’re pretending isn’t racism.
Not replying to you again. This while thread is gross.

The entire point of the Bad Kitty article was that your intentions actually DON’T matter and that if the people groups that you’re dressing up as find it offensive then don’t dress up as them. It’s really that simple. I personally find it completely not okay that there is a thread on here with a bunch of people NOT of the people groups being discussed assuring each other that as long as they don’t mean harm then it’s all okay.
No, you should not use sugar skulls for your piece, as there are many other ways to symbolise death. No, you should not dress up in tribal inspired dress unless you are a part of an actual tribe. There is no reason, however, that you cannot use tribal themed music, wear brown clothing, and explore the music as you dance. If you know that you are going to offend the people groups that hold these concepts dear to their heart, and you know that it’s just sprucing up a performance that really doesn’t need it, then why are you choosing to abuse your place in society by knowingly offending people anyway?
If you’re searching for loopholes as long anything that’s not an outright caricature is an issue then you’re being part of the problem.
Yes, people have always appropriated different cultures throughout time. Appropriated is a BAD word. That’s not a good thing. And it hasn’t been just people, it’s been white people. Which is why it’s especially grating that this thread is a group of white people reassuring each other that continued appropriation can be justified. It can’t be. Re-read the article. It’s not a personal attack on you, but if you read it and then still find a way to justify that it’s all okay based on your intentions then we have a problem. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. You can go ahead and tell yourselves that people are just too sensitive and will “find a way” to be offended by anything. But being offended isn’t a great way to feel. Majority of people don’t go through life looking for ways to experience deeply negative emotions. So maybe it’s time to stop blaming being hurt and offended on those who we are hurting and offending. Maybe it’s time that we instead stopped doing the things that hurt and offend them.

I use VivaVideo to edit stuff to post on Instagram. You can cut the length of videos, splice different ones together, make the picture square if you need to (for instagram), and even add music from mp3s you have on your own.
You can also add dodgy themes and filters but I use the instagram one. The only tip if give is to use Pro Edit mode rather than Video Edit and if you need to make the picture square chuck on a theme then go back to none and it’ll still save th squareness. Hope this is what you were after!

Poletice works like a mask for your hands. Basically you put it on then wait until it’s dried fully. I usually leave it another 5 minutes. Then you rinse it off and your hands will be clean. It will stop the sweat and the more you use it the better it works.
Another good one for that is tite grip. You put it on, leave it 20 mins to an hour then wash it off.I actually trialled the towelette for Mighty Grip and even I can’t remember what it was called! If you email Joel at sales@mightygrip.com he should be able to help you out with a name.

Rubbing alcohol will be fine. In Australia we use methylated spirits in a spray bottle as well (rubbing alcohol is ethanol here, so I’m assuming that is the same elsewhere).
Another great trick to cleaning poles is through steam. Veena has a tutorial on it using a proper steam cleaner but I’ve used an iron before and it worked great. You just work in sections steaming and then wiping clean with a microfiber cloth. It leaves it really clean and grippy.

I upgraded to a TG from chrome and I love it. My favourite finish is probably brass but when it’s hot and humid I stick to brass too well and take off skin on my side, so I went the TG and don’t regret it for a second!
I’m actually really keen to get a silicone pole but that’s another story!

After doing an intense back and quad stretch session day before last followed by follow up back session plus hips and middle splits yesterday I feel as though I am dying. Sooooo I’ve decided to buy a foam roller and use it during my hour long PT break today. It’s going to be super intense buy I know I’ll feel better afterwards and probably get totally addicted. Wish me luck!

My newest and biggest tattoo is a work in progress but here are some photos of it 🙂 having to stop poling on the area I get done for a few weeks is lame, but I love being able to show it off in my pole wear since its not really visible the rest of the time.
Men and women tend to have different pain thresholds but everybody is slightly different as well. The general consensus is that lower stomach is one of the worst places, but for me it was next to nothing. Most painful place for me is back of the upper thigh and butt.
Pain from being on the bone is also very different to skin pain IMO. I find pain from sensitive skin to be less bareable, but I also have a very high pain tolerance.
If you’re really concerned take panadol, ibuprofen and codeine beforehand (yes all three) and it’ll really numb the pain because you’re covering all three pathways. I can easily do a four hour session this way. Also, drink soft drink and/or eat lollies and you’ll be fine (it helps stop you going into shock).
Yay, tattoos! 😀

My favourite is http://indipolewear.com
I love, love, love their stuff. I tried them out instead of Bad Kitty because they’re an Australian brand and fell completely in love with the styles. They fit well and stay in place. I also love that it’s a new company so feedback is taken on board and I love the feeling of helping someone start up, as well as simply supporting Australian brands.
I’ve tried a few brands of shorts and these are by far my favourite. They just fit nicely and don’t I’ve around while I’m dancing. I also love the feel of the tops. They have a bunch of new colours and styles being released tomorrow, which I’m super excited about!

I may be being naive here but what would be stopping anyone from just signing up with PayPal to use a credit card through there? When I signed up for my account it was free and I have credit cards, debit cards and a bank account attached.
I have had paid lessons in the past but as I go to a physical studio I found i wasn’t using them just because my at home pole time was about practising what I learn during the week at lessons rather than learning new things.
Next year I might be moving somewhere with only one pole studio and rather than going there I’m considering using SV lessons instead as I won’t be working full time and it’s much better value for money plus more convenient.
Also, I’m super unco so I feel more confident learning from online lessons now that I have a better grasp of where my body is in space and on the pole.
-
Absolutely! There’s a woman at my studio about your age and she loves it.
I see zero reason why you can’t pick up pole dancing just as well as any exercise regime 🙂 -

MemberAugust 14, 2014 at 3:51 pm in reply to: What heel height do you prefer to dance in? Is there a particular brand you love?Oh wow, thanks for the tip on the platform height! Ridiculous to think that a higher overall height might actually be kinder on my foot because of a higher platform. I hadn’t really paid attention to that aspect, but not that you mention it it seems like an obvious thing to check!
I’ve looked into Ellies before but decided against them as I do have a wide foot and usually require half sizes, so Pleasers for me well.
Plus, Pleasers are easy to get my hands on in Australia. I’ve done some looking into The Highest Heel and it’ll cost me more to get a pair, but I’m still interested in hearing feedback about them!
Thanks for the info guys 🙂

That special sole with toe and arch support does sound super awesome!
As someone with hypermobile (and thus unstable) ankles who doesn’t wear heels day-to-day anymore due to a foot injury I’d love to hear a comparison on the shape of the sole vs a more flat sole like Pleasers for stability.
Because these heels are goegeous (I mean clear red, come on!) but stability has to be my number one concern when I’m healed up enough to start dancing in heels again.

MemberAugust 11, 2014 at 7:16 pm in reply to: So – you’ve fallen in love with a piece of music….Freelancing is something I really want to get into once my foot heals!
My issue is that I listen to music and can visualise these beautiful routines but it’s always using intermediate moves that I totally can’t do yet! I’m not great at dancing and flow so I struggle with my beginner to intermediate moves getting them into a routine. I suck so bad at it that I don’t even know how to practice.
Does it work to kind of choreograph stuff and then the more you get used it to the easier it is to do it on the fly?

Is there somewhere you can take it to get them sawn apart? I know here we have places like Bunnings where they sell building supplies and also will cut stuff. Surely you have a similar type place over there.

“before you Put up the and exercise”
Quality English. I’m digging the random capitalisation and missing words!Don’t feel bad about this, though. Everything always seems really obvious in retrospect. I used to work in foreign currency and money transfer services and I had the misfortune of having to try and convince someone they were being scammed, refusing to send their money but really trying to do it in a way that helped them not just go to someone else. They were convinced it was all legit until it finally clicked and then it seemed so obvious to them and they were quite upset. That’s how these things operate, they’re run by seriously unkind people.

I still use static stretching but now I have much more variety in how I stretch and it’s really, really sped up my progress. I have photos in that other thread showing the difference and it’s some sort of wizardry! When I get my boyfriend to help with my stretching (i.e. Him pushing my leg towards my face and me pushing back with my muscles) the results are soooooo much better. Partner stretching, when done safely and correctly is so amazingly effective.

This thread is a great resource for resistance stretching https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/2068 and also mentions a great DVD that I’ve been meaning to get. I use resistance stretching on as many muscles as I can, but find it had been particularly helpful for my hamstrings.

Oh wow these shoes are GORGEOUS!
I don’t actually dance in heels much because I’ve had a foot injury followed by recent foot surgery BUT I have danced in them before. The first thing I noticed about this brand is that the sole curves up a bit at the front. Thus is standard for heels as it makes them easier to work in. However, it makes them less stable to dance in.
The Pleasers designed to pole dance in have a flatter sole. Not saying you should definitely not buy another brand (especially if you’re a seasoned heel wearer!) but as somebody who’s new to dancing in heels I’d shy away from them. My current shoes are from the Pleaser Bordello range and I want to get a new pair when I’m finally allowed to wear them again for this exact reason. Also, I want a pair with clear heels to make my t-rex proportions less noticeable and my legs looks longer.

Maybe wait until you’ve fully healed and would usually try, and then wait an extra week as well just to be sure.
Make sure you’re really squeezing your thighs together and don’t just suddenly let go of the pole. If you’re really dropping into the move and your skin isn’t ready for it then that could be part of the problem.
So, get into position, squeeze tight and slowly loosen your hand grip. If you find that loosening it off a bit makes your skin burn then just sit like that for as long as you can, jump off and do that again a couple more times.
I’ve been working on death drops (not sure what other call them but it’s a release back with legs out straight, crossed at the ankles so you can fall back into a handstand etc.) and it uses a slightly different part of skin. It burns so bad I cannot let go, but each time I practice this way I lean back further and loosen my grip a little more. I’ve been doing this for weeks, so don’t expect progress over night, and just make sure you’re working at your own pace and not pushing yourself.

Right now it’s in my boyfriend’s dining room because I’m here to recover after foot surgery and neither of us have dining tables. The ceilings here are nice are high, which is lovely!
Usually it’s in a spare room at my place. I made sure to get a three bedroom place specifically so I’d have a spare room for it. It’s lovely, except the ceiling is low. I have an xpole and it requires no extensions in that room at all, so I can’t practice climbing at all.
In my old house it was in the dining room of an open plan apartment and people would notice it. I had a friend who loved it when I had people over because he could lean while still being in the middle of a room and he always commented on how great it was haha
We’ve just applied for a place together and it has a downstairs living area with floor bloods and a high ceilings which I have already put dibs on. We were always looking for a place with two living areas so I could set one up with pole(s), a floor area and the second TV for lessons. It’s gonna be rad!

MemberAugust 10, 2014 at 6:23 pm in reply to: What’s your flexibility nemesis? Share hints and tips!@PrettyPixie Be careful stretching the same muscle every day, even if it’s just gently! I have naturally flex hamstrings but if I stretch them two days in a row then on the third day I am LESS flexible and it takes a few days of not stretching them for them to recover. I’d definitely say only every two or three days if it’s a problem area, but others could disagree.
@Lina Me too! I find the wall stretch helps but I really don’t do it often enough… I feel like my shoulders threaten to pop out in dips (I’m hypermobile in basically my everything) and I am so sure it’s because they lack flex, but I just never think to actually stretch them out enough!
