As a general rule, the thinner the pole, the easier it is to use.  That said, if you use a 38mm one then then if you go somewhere and they have a 45mm you will find things much harder.  My instructor recommended a 45 as it is in the middle and using that should give you the flexibility to be able to use other sizes.  I know that I have no problems with the 50mm ones at the studio after practicing on the 45mm at home.  The 38mm brass also at the studio are much easier, and the tricks I master at home on my 45mm are easier than at home and therefore look better for show off purposes, lmao!!

Wow!  Your story could almost be mine.  I have a lot of the same kind of looks and comments from people for the same reason.  I kept th pole dancing quiet for a bit, but when I was just learning they were always commenting on the bruises so I came clean and played up the fitness and weight loss aspect of it.  I prefaced it with the "Not that I need to lose weight, but…"and when I gave figures for it from my studio's weight loss challenge they ran where the competitors took 3 classes a week and the winner lost 12 kilos and 53% of her body fat they started to look at it in a bit of a different light.  I think they still disapprove, but they can't say anything in front of me about it now since I pretty much proved it is a healthy pastime, lol!  Just don't pay attention to them if they criticise, I know from experience that can be close to impossible to do, but now I just take a perverse pleasure in knowing that I am fitter and likely healthier than the majority of them and that I have loads more fun getting that way than even the Gym junkies amongst them!

when my shoes begin to wear in patches I use matching nail polish rather than a sharpie because it is shiny and also quite durable.  I use it on the heels if they get scratched up too.

Oh, and also Rihana's Rude Boy, although I am pretty much sick of that one myself, it was done to death at my pole studio last year, lol!

The comment about shoes rang true with me  The tops of my feet were really sore when I first started the pole climb and my teacher suggested I try different shoes because the ones I was wearing had a strap across the top of my foot that I didn't even realise was hurting but when I tried her shoes it became clear and I changed my shoes and then the bruising got better very quickly.  I avoid any shoes with straps any lower on my foot than the ankle now when learning a new move.  Once i have the move it doesn't matter so much because I have the foot placement etc right by that time and the straps wont irritate so much but before that point I am very careful which shoes I wear.

Well, since I have only purchased contemporary music since starting to pole last year, mine would be intresting to say the least, since the first thing I ever bought was the Prokofiev Flute Sonata in D.  Wonder how that would work out…

My studio refers to it as the Inside Leg Ballerina

  • My Art of Pole discs are Pal on one side and NTSC on the other so are multi regional, anyone else lie this?

  • What I did was to use software to make the DVD an MP4 and put them on my ipod which would totally fix the whole, I can only watch them on the computer thing cos the ipod is connectable to the TV so you can watch them on TV through the Ipod.

I wouldn't mind knowing this tidbit as well, I really like that top too!  I have practically nothing 'up top' and am a size 2-4 dress wise so I am thinking a small would be fine but since I am in Australia it is a long way to send it back if I am wrong on that one, ya know?

I generally have very good grip(seriously, my instructor doesn't even need to look if we are supposed to be sliding down and she hears that lovely screeching sound of hands gripping too tight she calls me out when she is on the other side of the room not looking at me, lol!).  However the studio has no air conditioning and only 3 fans between 2 pole rooms and since there is also no insulation and such because it is a corrugated iron warehouse it gets pretty hot and sweaty in there in warmer weather.  I have found Itac2 level 3 works best for me in that situation.  I will still tend to get some sticking on occasion, but I really like the level 3 when sweaty.  If I find myself getting a little slippy on top of that I will apply a little Mighty grip which is my grip of choice when I am  not sweaty.

Yes, I think their DVD has helped, I actually prefer it to the stretch class I take at my pole studio and I think it has helped more.

Check out these guys site.  I have their front splits dvd and shortly will be getting the side splits one.  I think they make a lot of sense with their theories etc.

I I was also taught to kick up into inverts to start with.  We were told that lifting up into them was the next step on and that was what we were to work towards.  Kicking just didn't feel right to me, the movement just didn't make sense, all that kicking just to get upside down and all!  Anyway, long story short, I didn't like the kicking so within a couple weeks I was lifting.  My friends are for the most part still kicking however as they feel unable to lift yet and although I had never thought about it before, now I am a bit concerned for them.  One of them has already hurt her back and had to take time off from pole dancing.  I don't feel that I can tell them what they are doing is wrong because it is what they were taught but I will be encouraging them to work on lifting as soon as they possibly can!

January 16, 2011 at 6:32 am in reply to: Can one get flexibility and strength back once lost?

I go to the stretch class once a week.  I always have the best of intentions about doing exercises at home, but it never seems to happen very often owing to kids, fatigue(usually from the kids!!), or just plain old too much mess on the floor(again the kids are the culprits) and an unwillingness to pick up to do the stretches(lazy, I know).  I also only have one poe class a week so that is limited too.  Feeling pretty bad at the moment because my pole has been taken down because the room is being renovated so I have no pole at home and therefore no practice for about 4 weeks.  Hopefully in a week or so the room will be finished though ad things will be back to normal.  The kids will also no longer be playing in the room where my pole is so i will be able to do more stretch exercises which will hopefully help.

I would continue with the regime you are following now but add stretch time a few times a day at home.  I read that one stretch session working on front splits and one working on middle splits with general stretching on the other days of the week is a good way to get things moving because doing the same exercises every day doesn't so much increase flexibility but instead works more with muscle memory.  There was more to the article than that, I will try and find it again and post it for you if you like.

As for strength, I do a lot of crunches and pull ups on the pole pretty much whenever I walk past and we are given a drill each level at pole class specifically designed for that level.  They are not necessarily achievable at home(obviously pole climb drills are not feasible with the average ceiling height at home) but I try and adapt them to suit and they really work.

Strength, absolutely.  As  complete beginner 8 months ago I could barely hold my body on the pole in the simplest of moves and now I can easily lift myself up, invert, and many other things I would have thought impossible.  I am still working on flexibility.  10 years ago I could easily do the splits(well, not sideways, but you know what I mean), but now I am a good 8-10cm off the floor when I go down(5cm when warmed up better).  I have been taking stretch classes and the instructor swears I am getting better and I do feel I am myself so I will let you know in a couple of months, but I believe that flexibility is something that our bodies can relearn.  Just remember that when stretching it takes the body 30 seconds or so to realise it is being stretched so you need to hold the stretches for longer than that for them to be effective.

Another thought is to try shaving cream on your hands etc, not sure how you feel about grip products though…

As far as the titanium pole goes, i have one and actually find it more slippy than the chrome ones they had at my studio.  The chrome poles have since been replaced by brass(though there are still a few chrome and one titanium one left), and I find the titanium the most slippery of all of them.  I am thinking I am now going to save for a brass one for home, lol!

I have no fear of headstands, and I too have never done so much as a cartwheel in my life, my really huge irrational fear is the grip where you cup both hands behind the pole above your head and lift your legs from the ground for whatever move you are attempting from here.  Just the thought of it makes me go into a cold sweat.  I usually end up twisting my top hand around the pole in a different grip and just cupping the lower hand and going from there.  I have never slipped or fallen using this grip, it just totally freaks me out and I just can't get past that fear.  I just don't feel safe with it.

Anyway, I am not trying to hijack your thread or anything, just letting you know that although I have no idea of how to get over your fear of handstands, I understand it totally and can really sympathise with you.  I am just saying that yours is not the only irrational pole dance fear out there which will hopefully make you feel better, lol!

I have been looking for them in the Magenta colour for months, I think they have stopped making that colour in favour of the new ones they have put out which makes me sad 🙁  I do like the Sapphire and Emerald colours they have now though…
