I can totally understand older items not being fully stocked, it makes perfect sense. The girl I spoke to in the UK office didn’t mention being able to order them in though so thanks for the advice on that – I’ll get back onto them. I really appreciate your help 🙂

Thank you for all the advice, folks. Sounds like there’s a lot more to it than I originally thought! Sports and fitness shops are pretty rubbish hereabouts so think I’ll head on into the city at the weekend to see if I can try before I buy. Looking forward to getting started!

Lyme Lyte, if it makes you feel any better I’m still not seeing the delete button! Just double-posted by accident and can’t get rid. I’m on my phone, though – maybe that makes a difference…? *goes off to boot up antique laptop*

Haha, I actually tried it with a half-deflated football yesterday, glad I’m not the only one that went down the makeshift route lol. Thanks for the input, ladies – back to Amazon I go!

Ok, so I've been following this thread for a while, but today I videoed myself poling for the first time ever and was I surprised!?! For the first time in my life I can happily say I LIKE MY BUTT!!!! My waist is tiny and my legs aren't the hideous things I've always thought they were either. Yay for pole and YAY for this thread!!https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Feel free to use mine if you like. Good luck with your presentation!

Haha Maz, me too, trying to forget that tomorrow’s Monday as well hehe. Good luck with whatever way you decide to attack the pole 🙂 x

Hi Hookedonpole! Superman – aargh! I got into that from the ground for the first time in class a couple weeks ago and holy jeez I felt like the skin was being shaved off my thighs with a potato peeler – can only imagine what it’s like from a transition up the top of the pole! So much to look forward to….! lol

If there’s classes in your area though I’d say try those as well, it’s good to have a tutor on site who can give you pointers or tweak your positioning. It’s good to meet pole buddies that you can practice with between classes too x

Thanks Veena! 🙂 That’s another reason I love this site – you seem to have time for everyone! Do you ever sleep?!
Maz, the lessons are definitely worth the money; I wish I’d got them sooner. They go from beginner to advanced, and Veena takes you right through strength/conditioning/flexibility as well as the actual moves and poses. There’s a real focus on preparing your body which is hugely important, and v easy to miss if you’re just using YouTube (even my class teacher doesn’t push this, which is why I ended up with a lats injury from doing an invert when I’d only been poling for about 5 weeks: fail!). I’ve now gone right back to basics which is frustrating in some ways (we all wanna be swooping round the pole and pulling tricks right away!) but I know it’ll serve me better in the long run. Short of having a private lessons from a pro dancer, i think Veena’s lessons are the best start in pole you can get. x -
No probs! Are you going to classes yourself? How long have you been poling? Keep in touch and let me know how you’re getting along, would be good to have another newbie to compare notes with 🙂 x

I’m doing a mix of the two. I started poling about 3 months ago with weekly lessons at the local gym and got a pole at home about a month later. I was using YouTube vids to supplement class learning but I just subscribed to Veena’s lessons earlier this week and they are GOLD – I can’t recommend them highly enough! I’m gonna stick with classes for the social element but I think most of my learning will be done on here from now on.
As for the bruising, when I stop getting them I’ll let you know lol! My legs and feet are permanently covered but Arnica gel works wonders. Pole burn is getting less in certain positions though, thank god! -
Hi Maz!
Don’t get disheartened – you WILL get there! Pole is such a challenge but the feeling of achievement you get when you finally conquer a move or a pose is immense.
I’m new to pole too and it took me ages to get my first pole sit. Have you tried it in shoes? I found that they gave me more grip so I was able to stay up longer and build up a bit of strength (and pain tolerance!) in the upper thighs. It became much easier to get it without shoes after that.
Stick with it and keep practicing – it will come! x -

Hi MissPriss! All I can say is: Go for it!! It’ll be the best decision you ever made.
I’ve only been poling for three months but it’s already done so much for my confidence and self image, I can’t even begin to tell you. It’ll do exactly the same for you too, I’m sure of it. I shared a lot of your insecurities – at 5’3″ and 143lb I felt really self conscious going to my first class, but girls there were every shape and size you can imagine, and do you know what? Every one of them looked damn sexy swinging around those poles! If its any incentive, I’ve actually lost 10lb since then, just through poling and having the will to look after myself a little more, which I would never have done if I hadn’t gone to that class.
Get yourself along to that intro class this week and I guarantee you’ll never look back. Let us know how it goes!

I’m a newbie poler with relatively large thighs for my size and I’d tend to agree with Empyrean on most points here. I’d much rather an instructor pointed out if it was my build that was preventing me from getting a particular move – to me that would be less of a confidence-killer than trying it over and over again without success because it draws a line under it and lets me move on rather than my frustration with a single move making me question my overall aptitude.
That said, though, the thing to remember is that we’re all individuals, and the mark of a good teacher is one who can adapt her style to suit each of the different personalities and learning styles in her class. That sort of empathy and understanding takes time to build and can’t be established in the course of a one hour lesson. I can fully appreciate how and why this instructor’s words MIGHT be interpreted as offensive or hurtful, and maybe a sub teacher in an unfamiliar environment should have chosen her words with a bit more care. -
Thank you for the welcome, ladies – I’m sure I’m gonna have a lot of fun!
P.S. I am LOVING the like button!! -
Oooh, this sounds like exactly what I’ve been looking for! If someone could please send me an invite I’d be really grateful – jomercer09@live.com. x

Thank you Shona :). Whoops, didnt realise it had posted twice – sorry peeps. And it was supposed to say ‘speaks to me’, not ‘seals to me’, stupid predictive text – I’ll learn how to use my phone before I post again lol

Hi girls,
I’m a newbie on here but this post really seals to me so hope you don’t mind me replying.
I’ve been married just over two years and I discovered 18 months ago that my husband was having an affair and that it had started before we were even married. It shattered my world and sent me spiralling back down into serious depression, which I’d suffered from in the past. My confidence was less than zero and, well, I completely let myself go. I gained 30lb and totally just stopped taking care of myself. It was a vicious circle – the worse I looked, the worse I felt, but I just couldn’t break the cycle.
Then just before Christmas my friend dragged me along to a Poledance class. I stood there feeling so out of place and when I saw what the other girls were able to do my self esteem told me to forget it, get my stuff and go home because there’s no way my flabby overweight body would ever be able to any if it. I’m so glad I didn’t! From my first attempt at a spin I was hooked and within a month I had an Xpole at home.
Pole has done more for me in the past two months than anti-depressants accomplished in a year. It has given me back my confidence. Learning to work with my body is slowly teaching me to like it and be proud of the things it can achieve. I walk differently now, my head is held high and ive started taking a bit if pride in my appearance again. I’ve even lost 10lb. People have noticed such a difference in me and I do get some strange looks when I tell them it’s all down to pole but I really don’t care.
My Friday night pole class is the light at the end of the tunnel at the end of every week, and the friendship and support of the other girls has given me a bigger lift than any of them will ever know. I’m still at the beginning of my pole journey and can’t wait to see where it takes me – the only way is definitely up! x
