I wish there were more showcases so people who didn’t want the pressure of competing could perform without having to worry about being judged on whether they are a "winner" or not https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

How much is it for a shoot and how many photos do you get? -
It took me ages to be able to hold the crucifix, I could invert before I could hold the crucifix so I thought I’d never be able to do it! But it did come the more I practiced because each time I did it I could feel my grip getting slightly stronger, so all though it took a while, I got there in the end https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I didn’t try it when I was learning but a friend told me that hairspray can sometimes help with grip too
Good luck!

Make sure your toes are always pointed and try and keep your leg more still when doing the floor work (1:14) otherwise if your leg is moving around a lot it can look a little sloppy
Great floor work at 1:30. Looking forward to seeing the live performance https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Hello https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Yes I have seen shoes form Nitelife that have padded soles but because the other ones I bought were so huge I’m not to keen on buying another pair in case they’re massive again! Do you buy yours shoes from a shop or online? x

Great Interview https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Fawnia is such a great dancer. That Vertical Pole Challenge looks soo good I’d love to go to that! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif

I don’t have my center splits and so far from it but I can still do this move gracefully. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif The trick for me is going into a handstand about a foot 1/2 away from the pole and pelvic tucking my hips under as I tighten and engage my legs straight down in a straddle. I also make sure the pole is to one side of my private and not dead center. I was initially scared of this move as I didn’t want to hurt my privates. So I practiced it initially with a bulky feminine kotex napkin to take the fear factor away. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif
https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Thats does sound like a very good idea! Lol. Thanks for the advice girlies, it’s been very helpful https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif -
Yeah I wanna know the cheater version. I’ve tried this several times with only extreme pain to show. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif My personal theory is that Felix is able to do this so gracefully because she has a lot of flexibilty in her straddle splits. I am nowhere close to the straddle splits so this explanation saves my pride. But I could use some genuine insight https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I thought that too, that maybe because I can’t do it is because I can’t do the splits… obviously more flexibility would help, but she doesn’t actually do the splits at all here so hopefully it’s not that. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I’m hoping that not being able to do the splits yet wont prevent me doing this otherwise it will take a looong time https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

Veena’s elbow stand lesson is really good! That is the way I first learned to do a whatever-stand onto the pole.
This video someone else posted REALLY helped me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNGaQJmYT80" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Try a HEADstand like in the video! It’s relatively easy — use a wall if you’re nervous. I had never done a headstand before because I think they look silly, but when I did a press headstand after watching the video, I had an "AHA" moment. I was immediately able to do an press forearm stand on the pole for the first time. It’s much harder because you can’t lean your back on the pole, but I can now do them without it, too, because I understand the balance.
Hope the video helps you, too! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Wooow that is so helpful thanks for much https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_albino.gif I don’t have Veena’s lessons so I cant see the tutorial unfortunately. Will try with the boxes first like it says in the video above because that seemed to make it a lot easier https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Oo thank you those videos seem really helpful. Hopefully with a little practice it wont be took long before I can do it properly https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

MemberSeptember 14, 2010 at 7:19 pm in reply to: 14 months and learning some basicsI’ve polished and relearned tons of moves from DVDs and online that I thought I learned in the studio. The studio I went to didn’t even have consistent naming between classes or teachers. I was very afraid of the Iguana too…because they called it "the suicide" or "<teacher’s name> suicide"!! I can get into the Iguana (I like that name better) without a problem, but the shoulder mount still scares me.
I’ve got the shouldermount, although the first time I got up from it I realised I hadn’t planned what to do when I was actually up there https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif My ceilings are low so my pole is on the minimum length so I had to grip loads with my ankles and slide my body does as I wasn’t used to my arms being by my shoulders in an invert….. But its such a great feeling when you get it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif Hope I havent scared you though! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_dwarf.gif next time I did it I made sure I was mentally prepared to do an inverted crucifix from the shoulder mount… that helped me https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

MemberSeptember 14, 2010 at 6:41 pm in reply to: 14 months and learning some basicsI’m so happy to hear the lessons are helpful. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I feel its very important to understand the basics because most pole moves develop from basic moves. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
Also the iguana (pencil mount as I call it) is not an intermediate move in my lessons its advanced. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_nemo.gif
Good good, yes I definitely think it should be advanced. It’s intermediate on the Vertical Leisure site and on a few others too, but I’m surprised because they’re putting it in the same category of difficultly as the crucifix…. Wish it was! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_pale.gif

That makes two of us lol. I can do alot of the advance moves but scared to death of that Iguana mount. Also doesn’t help that my first class at the local studio i watched a beginner who wasn’t ready do it..then slide onto her head https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
Yikes yes I can see how that would put you off! If I had the abs strength to slowly lift myself off the floor I would feel much more confident but I just don’t have that strength yet (and I don’t know the technique to do this properly), I just don’t like the idea of launching into a a vertical position… head first! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

i am fimiliar with alot of the pole moves but i hav a hard time remembering the correct names and matching it with the correct move….how can i make this easier https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif
I use wikipole.org
I use wikipole too, although the website itself isn’t great which can make it hard to find moves your looking for quickly. I went to this website: http://www.verticaldance.com/poledancingvideoandphotogallery.htm and downloaded and printing out their moves catalogue so I can refer to it when I’m practicing without having to search through the internet https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Perhaps it’s because when you are on the floor, your body is at a 90 degree angle to your legs but when you are standing up, you’re trying to bring your leg up right next to your body. How easily can you lean over and touch your chest to your knee when sitting down?
When you next try doing the splits up the pole, hold on and lean back a bit, then try and put your leg up
I can’t actually do the splits properly myself (yet!), but I have been able to put my leg up the pole as if I were doing the splits, )except my bottom leg is bent) and found that leaning back more made it possible
Hope this helps and makes some sense!

MemberSeptember 13, 2010 at 4:01 pm in reply to: Need help with the move Hello boys!I know everyone calls different moves different things, which is why I provided the pic so you’d know which move I mean even if you call it something different. I must say though I’ve never heard the wrist seat be called hello boys over here. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif
I’ve only ever seen the move pictured to be called ‘hello boys’ (remember we are on different sides of the world so there will of course be many differences in pole move names) What is it’s other name(s)?
hm. you don’t go into this move the same way you go into a wrist seat (http://www.polzapart.co.uk/images/gallery/DOUBLE_WRIST_SEAT.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). you need to arch your back, let your head lean back and let your body go into plank with one hand above and below–you shouldn’t be sliding down when you do this. then twist through the hips to skew the legs. the only thing keeping your hips in place is the pressure you apply by pulling your crotch into the pole with your arms.
I was wondering where any mention to the wrist seat came from, but now I know that that’s what you call it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Thanks for the help on this, I hadn’t thought about twisting my hips so I will try that later https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif

yup thats the bumslide…as far as advice – I’m not much help as I find the burn incredibly painful so I have a cheater version that isn’t nearly as nice.
Would you be able to share the cheater version? Anything that looks similar would be good https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
As I understand it, it’s about sliding the pole to one side of the pubic bone to avoid owies and to really concentrate on tucking the hips under. However, I always fear crotching myself on the pole so have done this move a grand total of once or twice:)
Yes it does burn and hurt a lot doesn’t it! I will try and tuck my hips in more and hope that helps. I just found that on the way down my legs kind of got stuck so they were parallel to the floor and I couldn’t bring them down much more and thats when it hurt the most in the owies department!

It felt a little weird afterwards too… I’m not sure if I just turned it in too much? Has anyone else experienced this? My poor old knees I need them nice and strong so I can master this CAR! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/alien.gif
Hannah, when you were turning your knees towards each other, didn’t your legs turn in which closes the gap at the thighs for tighter grip? I can’t picture how only your knees turned without whole legs turning inward also. I find that turning in just enough for grip at thigh to be there. But yes, be careful to not hurt yourself. I love your profile pic, by the way!
thank you https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif My legs did grip the pole a bit better (now you’ve pointed it out I just realise how funny it sounds if my knees turned in indepentantly from my legs!! haha https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cyclops.gif ) But because my knee started to hurt I didn’t feel I could release my body down without it hurting even more. Also as I tipped my legs up the burn underneath the top of my thighs was paiiinful! Felt like I was sitting to high although when i was in the pole sit and tried to position the pole further away from my lady parts in preparation for tipping my legs up, I felt like I was going to fall off https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif

I read through all of the replies to this thread and tried all the techniques and I did get a little closer… I actually ended up being ale to do the advanced plank for the first time so not all bad! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif

I’m the same in that I want to be more flexible in my back… I was actually going to post a thread about it but then found this https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
I did the cobra pose today as I’ve heard before that that’s a good back stretch, but found it felt more like it was stretching my tummy and not my back, also when I stopped the base of my spine felt funny so i must have done it wrong somehow https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_neutral.gif Does anyone know how you can ensure you do this pose correctly and also how long are you suppose to hold the pose?

Helllo https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I’m new here too and also from the UK, near Cambridge. Yey glad there are some more UK ladies here…. hopefully there will be some local(ish) pole jams sometime https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
