I have my home pole in the garage and also sometimes get worried about falling on my head onto the (concrete) floor!
So what I do is take the sofa apart and put the big foam bits that make up the seat and back of the sofa under the pole and learn new tricks with them under me until I can do the moves confidently.
This enables me to feel safe and if I did fall, I'd be falling onto many inches of foam!
I find that this is also more effective than just taking off the cushions because with so many small cushions if I get excited about a new move and do a victory dance I trip up!!! haha https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif

Cool, thanks ladies. I'll keep it as that! 🙂

I saw some nasty comments on one of alethea's videos. Her style of dance is sexy…. but so what? She is wonderfully strong and always executes the moves perfectly in every video of hers that I've seen. On that video with the nasty comment, personally I think that it was the camera work that made it look sleazy which is why people seem to get the wrong idea. I can't remember which performance it was, which ever championships were shown on a swiss sports channel I think….. Anyway the camera work was absolutely appalling, particularly for a sports event. Throughout the whole performance he (and I'm assuming it was a he for obvious reasons!?!) was just zooming in and out of her nether regions the entire time. It was a disgusting way to film a performance. Did exactly the same for when Felix performed. It's no wonder people think its sleazy when it is filmed like a porno. I was hugely disappointed by such rubbish filming as most of the time you couldn't even see the moves they were doing. Such a shame that a crap cameraman has been allowed to ruin beautiful girls beautiful performances
They wouldn't zoom in and out of a ballet dancers lady garden when they're doing the splits so it's about time they stopped doing it to polers!

MemberJanuary 2, 2011 at 5:30 pm in reply to: Do you tell other people that you pole dance?– I didn't have time to read through all the post so hopefully I'm not repeating what someone else has said. I like to use the term pole "fitness". Especially around people who do not yet understand what it is all about. If they say "oh, pole DANCING". I quickly say "NO pole FITNESS". Some people will never get it though! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif

I often say pole fitness too and then when people know more about it I start saying pole dancing as they then know thats it's not what they might think of initially at the mention of pole dancing.
Maybe you should talk to your mum and ask her why she doesn't want your dad to find out? I felt a bit weird about it at first because of the stigma that is attached to it but my family were very accepting and were amazed at some of the moves I could do when I showed them 😀
It's actually my mum that corrects people by saying "it's fitness, pole fitness!" when someone says I pole dance which I find quite funny! lol
To convince anyone that pole does not have be anything to do with "bumping and grinding" I just show them videos of people like Jenyne Butterfly and Zoroya Judd. They're soon convinced it's not always what they first thought!
I tell everyone now, I couldn't care less if they think it's just stripping…. I'll happily show them what its really all about for me!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I think it depends from person to person – I struggle with elbow grips and the caterpillar but love my split grips and butterflies. In the classes I went to they taught the girls to do a closed version of the butterfly first and then as you get more secure and stronger with your split grip and butterfly leg positions you are able to progress to a full split grip and butterfly. I had already taught myself the butterfly and actually found the closed version harder but the other girls thought closed was easiest a first so again it tends to vary for each person
I’ve never seen a picture of the closed butterfly so I will try and take one for you later so you can see what I mean https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

amazing! Actually gave me the shivers it was so good https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I’ve been trying this too!
I found this video which was pretty helpful, not quite an extended butterfly so I found it a bit easier:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoDkAY9o5Uc
Also found that from an inverted D it was ok to try…. I haven’t quite got the jackknife yet it yet but getting there https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I dont rest my head on the floor like he does, I’ve been told it puts too much pressure on your neck
I rest my head on my arms for it’s very near to the floor but my weight is not on my head/neck
-
I couldnt climb properly or site for ages either, I’ve also got teeny arms so you’re not alone!
Even now I can do a lot of advanced moves, I still find climbing can be a bit of a challenge sometimes so I’ve had to work on it a lot more (it doesn’t help that my pole is so short though https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif)
Just want to chime in on the small size body https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif (I deal with blood pressure cuff too) I am also very thin, but have developed strength I never thought I would. I have always worked out with some form of aerobics, very good power flex class for years, etc. However, when started poling it was as if I’d never done anything. It’s different dealing with lifting own body weight. It comes with time, strengthening and learning new moves in baby steps. And each new trick or hold starts over with building strength, for me anyway. I use a lot of veena’s strength training, it works wonders, as well as her lessons! Poling also takes patience, which can be as difficult as learning new moves. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
Like hookedonpole, I’ve developed strength I never thought I’d have through doing pole but I hadn’t done any real exercise since school (apart from walking) until I started pole. I literally had no muscle and now I feel strong https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
Because i pretty much started from scratch, I had no upper body strength so concentrated on doing pole lifts and moves like the teddy hold (with hands) in order to get used to holding my body weight and strengthening my arms. It really worked and now I find a lot of other pole moves easier because I took time to develop my strength. Thats not meaning to say that I didnt spend a long time being frustrated that I couldnt do certain moves but I put the time and it does really pay off https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gifGood luck! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I dont know of any purpose built pole studios either round here sadly. Most random thing though…. I’ve done all my classes at Pink ladies, did you go to a follow on class?? I dont go to the follow-ons cos I have a pole at home but when i went back for the next course my friend Emma said an Irish girl was there who was really good and very graceful! I’m guessing this was you??? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

It took me ages to get the cruxifix too… like you said, I just couldnt get enough grip to take my hands off but when I did it felt goooood and it is a huge accomplishment. It’s great to hear when someone achieves a move they’ve been trying for ages whether it’s beginner or not https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
