PUT YOUR X-POLE ON THE JOIST!!!

Veena said this in another topic somewhere…

But for anyone that knows anything about home construction (in the US), the standard separation for ceiling joists is 16" on-center (16" between the centers of the joists). The dome for the x-pole is 15", so depending on how wide your joists are, you’ll either miss it completely or you’ll just barely be touching. Ceiling joists are closer together in the UK, so it would be more stable to put them between the joists there because it would be touching 2 of them.

And I’m waiting for the FedEx truck right now for my x-pole…

Good job! this one is first on my invert list to learn as soon as my new pole gets here. Good for you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Well the good news is I can already do the front and back hook spins and the carousel spin (both right and left handed). Like I said, the chair spin needs work. I can’t seem to get enough momentum, but I know it’s because instead of kicking my outside leg up and pulling my legs up off the floor, I kinda let my body collapse into the chair position so I lose my momentum and I’m like 2 inches off the floor and have no room to spin. I used to do it really well, but then all of a sudden I started stumbling into it and can’t do it now! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif When I get my x-pole I’ll try it again.

I had to look up the other inverted moves Fleur mentioned, but I go back and forth on days that I can actually hold onto the pole with my legs. Some days I just slide right off and other days I can stay on, but not enough that I feel confident enough to let go with my hands. Again, I’ll try it when my new pole gets here. This goes for the cross ankle and knee releases, too. I can usually sit on the pole just fine, but I have my bad days with it just like anything else.

But I can’t seem to find what the single and double climbs are. Is that just how high you’re going up the pole, like how many times you pull yourself up, or does it refer to the actual technique to do it???

I looked up customer reviews on Spencer’s website (the store where I bought it) and they must’ve cleverly not put up most of the negative reviews. Most people said their 200-some odd pound boyfriend could swing on it and it wouldn’t budge, or that it needed a just a little tweaking to stay put (i.e. the blots in the ceiling). The biggest complaint was problems with the set-up.

I called the store to see if I could get a refund, and they said I need the original box, which I do not. Which is stupid, it’s not like they can re-sell the thing! I’m thinking about taking it to the store and really giving the manager a piece of my mind… I paid $140 for it!

And just for $hits and giggles, here is a link to the Electra-pole website where they have a video of a dancer that is "putting the pole through its paces" to show off how good it is. Well, take a look at the rigorous workout she put this pole through: (scroll down a bit, left side)

Yeah that pole aerobics pole looks exactly the same in the pics I’ve seen of it.

And also, when I take it down later this week, I’ll probably take some more pics of it so you can see how it’s actually put together.

I too suffer from sweaty hands, and I’m also a newbie – about 2.5 weeks now. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I have a couple bruises still from my first week, too. Both are normal, as the other girls have told you.

just thought I’d comment about the pain tolerance: my husband had to be pepper sprayed for his training, and all the women that went through it said they would rather go through child birth again than get pepper sprayed. He did it, and he said he kinda wants to do it again just to see if his reaction would be the same. Meanwhile, I have a 16-month-old and cringe at the idea of being pregnant because the memories of labor are still very vivid in my mind.

I sent curvydva a PM about this but I wanted to let everyone else know, too:

I have the same problem she does: 7′ ceilings and I want an x-pole. After poking around I got an idea, and I emailed the x-pole company to see if my idea would work, and the good news is it will. They said if you buy the standard x-pole and also buy the 750mm extension, you can use that extension piece in place of the bottom standard piece and the pole will fit 7′ exactly. So it IS possible to make an x-pole shorter, but it will cost you an extra $40 + shipping for that extra piece.

I’m always having problems with grip – my right hand is always really sweaty and my left hand is dry! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mad.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif I do most of my spins left-handed only because I can hold onto the stupid pole better with it, even though I’m right-handed.

I’ve heard putting hairspray on your pole will make it easier to grip, too, but I’m not sure if that’s recommended or good for the pole… You’d definitely want to clean it off when you’re done using it, anyway.

For me, until I get the actual strength in my hands, I rinse my hands off frequently when I’m poling. This wards off the sweat for a while and as Rouge said, the moisture can help you stick a bit. The key is to dry it enough it’s not slippery but not perfectly dry, either. And also as Jungle Cat said, the weather effects it, too. It’s been rainy where I live in the Southern Tier of NY, too, and the humidity has made a difference.

If you have Windows XP it should be there, like I said it’s default software. I’m not sure if Vista has it but I’m not sure why it wouldn’t. You can import any kind of video file to it, so as long as you get the video on your computer one way or another (digital camera, webcam, etc.) you can import it. Like I said, it sucks, big time, but it gets the job done and if you’re broke, it serves the purpose. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

WMM should be under My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files > Movie Maker > then click on the moviemk.exe file. Then on the left side there will be a menu that will say Capture Video and it’ll have your options for getting the video(s) in the program. If it’s already on your computer, click "import video" and browse for it. Then the video(s) will appear in the middle of the screen. Then you drag and drop them onto the timeline below and put them in the order you want them. If you want to clip them and edit them, you can click on the clip and drag the end of it to cut off part of it. My first video was one long video, so I had to keep dragging the original video to the timeline and cutting it to just the parts I wanted. It was annoying because it was a 15 minute video and I cut it to like 10-second segments… I’m sure there’s an easier way to do it…

As far as the words, go to Tools > Titles and Credits. It’ll then ask you what and where you want to put the words, like on its own screen in the timeline (beginning, end, middle, etc.) or if you want the words right on the video. Pick which one you want, type it in, play with colors and fonts, then click done. You can always rearrange them after you do them. The title screens (just the words, not the video with words) can just be dragged wherever. The words that go with the video will appear in its own timeline under the video timeline. You can drag those to wherever you want them to appear on the video. Just make sure you do these last, because if you go back and edit more video, the words that go with it won’t follow it to wherever it was displaced to in the timeline.

You can also add an audio track and stuff like that, but I just filmed with music in the background…

These are just the basics, but it’ll get you started. Good luck finding the program!

P.S. I’m glad you enjoyed my video so much! I’ll have to give you a shout-out in my next one and do a little victory dance just for you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif

Yes, get some vids posted! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif

I’m a bum and use windows movie maker… I take the vid with my digital camera and just upload it to WMM. It sucks, but it’s default software for windows and I can’t afford anything else. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif If anyone knows of a good FREE program, that would be great *asking for both me and Jungle Cat!*

I have the wonderful, magnificent, lovely Electra-pole! *dun dun dun* I bought it without realizing how deep I wanted to get into pole dancing and thought either way it would be ok if I bolted it to the ceiling. Well, it’s bolted to the ceiling, screwed to the floor, and I had to fill the top joint with expanding foam because it rattled horribly. It’s staying put, but the joints don’t hold solid and the pole moves. It won’t go anywhere, but the problem is the pole sometimes spins and also the flexing in the joints is making the join between the top 2 joints kinda flare out. It kinda looks like the edge of a bell, and it hurts to slide over it with my knees. I’ve tried to make it stop the flexing, but nothing’s worked.

I’m looking into getting an x-pole used, and I’m waiting for a response back from the girl to see if we have a deal or not…

Oh, this should be another topic but I’ll ask it here: X-poles supposedly can go on ceilings 7’4" minimum, but does anyone know if you can make it 7′ even? I live in a mobile home and all our flat ceilings are only 7′. The pole I have now was too tall, also, and we ended up taking one of the plastic nuts off the bottom to make it fit. Is there anything you can do with an X-pole to make it shorter and still safe? We’re going to have to invent a place to put it if we can’t, which isn’t a big deal, except it’ll end up in the living room and I’ll have to take it up and down every day…

Lol I saw the topic and who started it and I immediately thought "OOOHHH boy, he must’ve gotten his pole." I’m looking at getting a used x-pole, so I’m excited myself. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

    Congrats, Jungle Cat!

So yeah right after I posted last, I tried doing a spin one-handed and I got it… on video, too. I posted a vid of some clips if you haven’t checked it out already. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif And it was also a good day overall because I was able to stay up on the pole and got that on video, too.

I unfortunately haven’t learned anything new yet, but I’m working on it. The day after I posted this, I tried to let go during both and invert and sitting and wasn’t able to hold on, so I’ve been going back and forth with that. I’ve also been working a lot and there were a couple days I ended up doing double shifts at work and was too tired to practice when I got home ( 6:00 AM to 8:15 PM = suck).

My goals right now are to get those holds more solid, to work towards doing one-handed spins (I think it’s more fear of falling than strength…), and transitions transitions transitions! I also can’t seem to master the cradle spin – it looks like it would be insanely easy, but I’m clinging to the pole for dear life instead of gracefully spinning down it.

I’m hoping to maybe put up a video of some kind this week; I had to talk it over with my husband because he didn’t like the idea of me posting videos of myself on the internet. I had to let him check out the site and convince him it’s not like YouTube and that this isn’t looked at as a porn site. He said ok, but as long as I’m not wearing just my underwear. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif
