Air Bodywave is a very challenging move because it requires a strong split grip which is one of the harder grips to use. You can either do it with the top arm straight in which case you need to focus on using the lats of the top arm to bear your weight or you can do it with the top arm bent at 90 degrees which means you rely mostly on your bicep to bear your weight. You want to practice this grip putting as little pressure on the bottom arm as possible so start with a very wide grip. As your top arm gets stronger (either lats or bicep or both!) you will be able to push your body away from the pole with the bottom arm without that arm bearing much of your weight. You want to practice this grip and get very strong before attempting bodywave. See Veena’s lessons for some great strengthening excercises https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Trena that sounds amazing! I’m so happy for you https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif You’ve got a great group of girlfriends from the sound of it!

Adamseve I know that was not your implication! Rather I meant to say it might seem as though I’m implying that by posting a vid https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif Does that even make sense anymore! lol

Sissybuns, good for you! We should all be able to be honest with ourselves about our "level" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Adamseve, I am positive Veena has a million preperatory exercises for inversions, check them out! Besides, I think it would be strange for me to post a tutorial here, I have great respect for Veena as a capable and excellent instructor https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Hey Pinkitty,
Sounds to me like you need an instructor to guide you with some structure and feedback and you have come to the right place! Veena has wonderful lessons that are arranged according to difficulty so that you can build up strength and a repertoire of pole movement in a sensible and logical manner. The lessons are also ten times more cost efficient than going to a studio if you aren’t looking for group exercise which has a different feel to it (some people love to take class at a studio because you have people around to encourage and inspire you) or if you are not anywhere near a studio. Either way, take advantage of the excellent opportunity this site is giving you!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

If you think she is buff in the videos, just wait til you see her in person! Have fun https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I took a workshop with her when I was in NYC.

This is essentially a teddy hold with a spin added. Practice teddy hold and notice that your hips need to make it across the pole for you to really be able to squeeze into the armpit of the inside arm. This is a very hard spin!

I’m sure Veena has a lesson for this move, check it out!

Jeng, there is nothing wrong with rotating around the pole in order to get into superman instead of flipping your legs down to get into it. I personally think it hurts less to make your body rotate around the pole until your hips face down rather than turning your leg against the pole (ouch!). Does that make sense? I saw the video, you;re doing great. just keep at it and the pain will get better https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I’m with Neke and Veena on this one. I broke my toe landing wrong from a split leap in dance a few years back and I was off for 2 months https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif It SUCKS and it hurts like a biznitch.
But anyway, back to Dancing Under the Influence, beside the obvious points that it is not a good idea from a safety standpoint here is another perspective: many of us here struggle with getting pole dance recognized as a legitimate sport and art form. I do not know a single ballet dancer who would drink before getting on stage, a single runner who will drink before running a marathon, a single swimmer who will have a few beers before a meet… We must recognize that this is a serious form pf physical activity that requires muscular strength, endurance, balance, and quick reflexes if anything goes wrong!!! This is simply NOT compatible with drinking.
Also, I think some women have a couple glasses of wine before getting on the pole in order to relax or let down their inhibitions but again, I feel that this is in contradition with pole dancing which I see as an empowering art that makes you gain confidence in your own sexiness. You shouldn’t need a glass of wine to feel sexy! What’s the point of pole dancing if it doesn’t really make you feel like a goddess unless you’ve had a few too many?
Just my own two cents https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Like Veena said, static and spinny require different technique. I think it’s best to start out on static and then move to spinny so you learn to use your momentum to its fullest before taking it back a notch (or five) for spinny. Also, I find you can really strain your fingers and forearm muscles on spin if you haven’t built up the strength so there’s another reason to start with static. I like them both but tend to do more static work because we don’t have spinny poles at the studi and I don’t have much room at home.

Hello and welcome!!!
I agree with you, I’ve always been flexible and in good shape from ballet but it’s amazing the kind of strength you get from pole!
Did you know Alethea Austin of BeSpun, Miss Sexy USPDF ’09 is coming to North Carolina next weekend for some workshops? You should look into it!!!
Looking forward to seeing you in a vid soon https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

(1) How long do you practice?
I practice 1-2 hours total with warmup time. I usually spend the first half hour warming up.(2) How often do you practice?
2-4 times a week depending on how much I teach. I try to go for every other day.
(3) Do you just freestyle or do you have a plan of action?
Some days I decide to just do a bunch of uncut freestyle dances. Other times I have a list of moves I’ve written down to work on. Most times I do a warmup freestyle dance (only spins and transitional moves, maybe one climb and simple invert at the end) and spend the rest of the time working on individual moves.
(4) Do you stretch before, after or before & after practicing?
I do not usually stretch my legs when practicing pole but I do make myself stretch my arms AFTER!! I stretch my legs AFTER my cardio workout (power walking 4 miles). Did I mention I stretch AFTER not before a workout? Oh, ok, just checking https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
(5) Do you incorporate any strength training & conditioning exercises into your practices?
No, I only do pole for upper body and core. Power walking and the occasional ballet class is for the lower body.
(6) Do you self-teach, take classes, or both?
Well, I teach classes. Other than that I am self taught since I am the most advanced dancer at my studio.

How about pixie???
Hope you feel better. I take dance study breaks when I’m really stressed. Or I just take a minute to do a handtsand or heastand, the extra blood to the brain seems to refresh me https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Hey,
I was just looking at the picture of your aysha and the way you are doing your split legs is definitly not going to allow you to move your hips away from the pole. It is normal and necessary when learning this move to keep your hips close the pole. As you start to feel more controlled and confident, you will be able to move your hips away from the pole with one condition: another part of your body needs to move forward to counterbalance. This is usually done with the legs in the split pointing down more toward the floor and in front of you instead of in line with your hips. Does that make sense? Also, you really need to think of engaging the abs on this one, if you let them go, you allow your back to arch and can fall backwards (I almost did that the other day!!). I was thinking of posting a vid with the hip difference of the two ayshas so now I’m thinking I will to better explain this!Fleur
