The one biggest thing that helped me was practicing the Tuck Invert over and over. It took a while and I had to be patient with myself. Veena has a great Tuck invert lesson. Getting the tuck invert down is key. You will get it! 🙂

Empy, I bet it would help. 🙂 There was a girl in the workshop with me who said after poling for 2 years, she still could not get the chopper. Then she inverted into a Gemini, changed her grip (like Althea suggested) and was able to go right into the chopper! Just by changing her grip on the top hand. She said she her legs would fall right down before, but this grip helped her stay up. 🙂

I was in a drops and slides workshop with Alethea Austin and Karol Helms last night! Alethea showed us this grip for the chopper drop and it seemed so much easier this way. 🙂

Koba, I agree there are subtle ways to say things and privately. Most definitely! This was said in front of the entire class, right at the point she was starting to work with someone else.

This move is not impossible if you have thick thighs, it’s just not. I have seen it done. If a move completely impossible and the girl has no hope of ever getting this move, I wouldn’t tell her her thighs are too big for it. I would just say, “maybe you’re not ready for this move so let’s try this move instead.” I wouldn’t say in so may words, “don’t even bother trying this move. You’re too fat for it”. There has got to be a better way to say things.

If I were 100% positive that was the real reason, I would tell her, “it looks like you’re struggling. Here try to position the pole a little higher on the back of your thigh, so you have a little more room to rotate over. Keep practicing your advance apprentice hold until until you get the feel that the pole is just in the right place and you have enough room. Try practicing with 1 foot on the ground. You’re doing great! Not everyone gets this move right off the bat.” I wouldn’t mention the size of her thighs. That is too personal for some people.

Awesome post, Amy! Very well said.

Thanks, everyone! 🙂

She did look a little taken aback for a second at first, but didn’t react much. Everyone was standing there. She acted pretty normal, but seemed quiet after class.
-
@horsecrazy.. she made the comment in front of everyone and moved on to the next person. She did get up and demonstrate how she herself does the move. No modifications. I don’t think she meant to be mean, I just don’t think she used common sense.

Advanced Apprentice to Superman. She said her callous felt like it was ripping off every time she went to turn. She did the move fine last week. The sub didn’t know this.
-
Actually, this girl can do this move and has done it before. She complained that her callouses were hurting her and it made her stop half way through. The sub didn’t know this and was making an assumption.

Thanks for these responses. I recently studied for and passed my ACE certification exam and there is a chapter on teaching styles and intrinsic/extrinsic motivation and maintaining adherence. Pointing out something like that is a definitely not professional, helpful or motivating.

That’s awesome!! I heard you can burn that many calories! It’s probably right on. 😀

Practicing super advanced moves burns more calories too. I think of it more as a circuit training type workout. Doing cardio (dance) and strength together.

@nymphdancer, I love the chocolate chews! Yum! I love the caramel ones too. 🙂 I have liked every product I've tried also. I haven't tried making the protein bars. That sounds delicious!
@Sair, I have the same hand creme on my desk at work. 🙂

@nypmphdancer- that’s awesome!!! :)) I use the RE9 Advanced Body Cream mostly, and also will sometimes use the Ginger Citrus body cream at night. 🙂 I also like the FC5 body lotion. :))

I’m 5’1″ and from the Chicago area too. 🙂 I actually prefer the 50 mm over the 45 mm but I learned on a 50 so I’m more used to it. I agree most acrobats and gymnasts are petite, so that’s definitely an advantage. 🙂

Check out Arbonne.com too. The Skincare, Health and Cosmetics are premium quality and vegan. They are awesome! I do it part time myself. A friend of mine is just one step away from getting her white Mercedes. That’s what you get when you reach Regional Manager status. I love all of their products….Especially the RE9 line. No mineral oil in any of their products too. I use the lotion all the time and have no problems poling. 🙂

Welcome!! I’m 43 and started a year and a half ago. So far no problems and flexibility is not an issue for me at all. Knock on wood. 🙂 A friend in one of my classes says I’m very “bendy”. :))) I think it’s a matter of not pushing too hard, too fast and just let yourself progress at a nice pace.

It has given me confidence and made me a stronger person, physically and emotionally. It made me believe in myself more. When I was a kid, my mom was a manager of a health club and taught a bunch of aerobic exercise classes. I used to take her classes and loved it. I still love the group fitness class environment, because it always reminds me of those fun days getting to take my Mom’s classes. I’ve always dreamt of teaching classes some day. I never pursued it because never thought I could be good enough. Since starting pole a year and a half ago, I’ve learned so much and am amazed by the the things my body can do. I took
the Pole Moves Beg/Intermediate Instructor certification class last month and just passed my ACE Group Fitness Instructor certification exam this past Thursday! I will be taking the Advanced Pole moves instructor cert class in July. I also started teaching Pole classes a few weeks ago at a fitness studio near me and I’m loving it!! Pole made me believe in myself and actually helped me pursue a dream I’ve had for a long time. If you would have told me I would be doing all of this a year and a half ago, I never in a million years would have believed it. :))) -
This is so great! I missed it but will be looking out for the video clips! So happy for you! 🙂
