Thank you so much Veena…. and what a relief. I’d hate to think my inner thighs are burning from a day spent doing things backwards!

Whoop! I got the lessons too. I thought my husband would be annoyed by me spending more money on pole… But when I mentioned I was thinking of getting a subscription (before even mentioning the sale) he was so supportive. Very happy!!!

I have a little FlipHD camera and the “tripod” (it’s only a few inches long) I have has these crazy bendy legs so it can hang anywhere. I haven’t tried if for pole yet… But I’m planning on it.

I got my Chrome Xpole for 2 major reasons…
1. I found a good deal on it
2. I felt like it was a somewhat “standard” pole (if there is a such a thing)I thought that it being pretty common and with a difficult grip, and so easy would require me to build up strength so I could eventually get on any pole and be alright. I didn’t want to worry about taking a pole class or attending a pole convention where they used slicker poles.
HOWEVER, looking back I do wish I got a a grippier pole. In theory learning on the “harder” pole sounds nice… but really it can be discouraging. I think building my strength and confidence on a pole with more grip would be nice.

I’m up for a weekly check in!
But I’m with Veena on the time table, as I go I may decide I need to repeat week 3 or something…
Right now my splits are pretty pitiful… so my goal is really just improvement. My goal with my spreadsheet was just to organize the information provided on that website. I’m just the kind of person who needs charts and graphs and spreadsheets in my life. I’m not endorsing it per se, but I am going to give it a go…
Hopefully I can start following along with Veena’s lessons soon. In the meantime I’m doing my stretches, I’m trying Veena’s core exercises… Oh and working on my March (and first ever) challenge! Eeek.

I’d also love to know if there has been any improvements?
I feel like I’ve been going through a similar thing: https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/Home_sweet_home_20140228090342
Recently I’ve had a much better pole session at home but still not studio level. I also know the frustration you’re feeling. It is extremely discouraging to come home and want to show off to your husband and look like a complete mess.
I’m new to pole.. But I’m staying determined. I do feel like your instructor has a valid point about building muscle. Thats how I’m looking at it. You see these super strong pole dancers dancing on lampposts and street signs without a care about the metal type. That’s my hope I guess…. to just be able to pole regardless of the material. I mean there are the grippier poles, but if you’re only using them… if you go to a studio, a convention, a workshop… you might have trouble. I’m not 100% sure what they would use… but I’m trying to learn to be adaptable.
So yeah, I’m trying to stay positive… but yes, its not always easy. Especially as a beginner, when it seems really easy to just give up… but stick with it. I’m going to…and I guess we’ll see how it goes!

Thanks AnnVan. I wasn’t sure it was grip really because I was always fine with my pull ups and such… but for some reason my spins would just slip. I was falling, and tripping over myself… it just wasn’t pretty.
But whatever it is/was…. I cleaned my pole and turned the heat way up in my space and warmed my body up. I can’t say exactly what did it but I had a MUCH more productive pole session yesterday. 🙂
Whew! -
Yeah, there probably is no real reason to leave the hotel anyway (sounds like thats where the action will be). I do remember there being a really nice mall though. 🙂
I’ve never done a skype polejam… what do you during one? Motivate each other? Try new moves?

It’s great to be a planner! And it does look like a ton of fun so I see why you’re super excited.
I think I’m going to set a few goals for myself to hit by my birthday… April 1st. And if I do maybe I’ll feel more confident with pole. At this point I’ve only told a few friends I’m doing it, and not my parents. Not for fear or judgement over the stripper stigma… Really just because I’m not at a point where I’d want to show anyone…
And also I’m sure my family is going to want to do something for the 4th/moms bday… But I think if I get myself where I want to be and propose it before they’re all planned its possible. And even if you have a roommate or two we can still meet up and say hello… you can tell me all the awesome things you have planned and I can copy! Haha!
And your license plates… Ok I’m a license plate snob. I think it can make or break a nice car (it’s a all about the accessories). Well, I just think RIs are subtle and nice… But the wave gives it personality so it’s not boring (like our piss yellow reflective license plates). Then I read this article once on how in RI the number on your plate can be a status symbol. Apparently people pay top dollar for a low number… But mostly they get passed down from generation to generation. Any time I’m in RI I try and spot “important people” with really low numbers. You should google it! It’s cool!

Welcome! My undergrad degree was in Bio too! I know why you needed to really focus, it’s not an easy major!
Nice to meet you and happy poling!

Veena, no I don’t have the lessons… Yet.
I’m sure they help tremendously.Right now I just bought a pole, some heels, mirrors, grip aid, studio lessons… I think my husband will shoot me if I spend another cent right now… Especially when everything I try and show him at home looks so bad! I’m bummed I missed the Vday sale… but I’m going to work really hard and maybe he’ll get me them for my birthday in a month!!!
I do need to dedicate more time to pole practice. I often pop in the room and do a set or two of pole crunches, pole pull ups, etc… And I do find my strength improving. I’ve also been trying to stretch. So I haven’t spent too much time on moves/spins at home…
I’m still semi convinced it has something to do with a little more than an adrenaline rush. But I’m sure that’s part of it.
For example my instructor showed me how to do a front hook into back hook spin. First time out of the gate I did it at her studio. But at home I’m smashing to the floor before I can flip direction. The more I think about it the more I think it’s an issue of momentum. I must be holding back… (Even when I’m trying not to)…
1. For fear of smashing into a bookshelf/wall/bed
2. For fear of coming down half on the base. (That really hurts, so many times I’ve stepped on that darn thing in the wrong way, or stubbed my toe on it. Ouch.)So the advice from everyone is really valid. I do think I should probably warm up more just in general… But I need to become more familiar with my space and my pole. Once I am more comfortable I hope I can maximize my space and be less cautious.
Ok I’m making a promise to myself to do more… And hopefully I’ll be able to get on the SV lesson train real soon!!!
-
Thanks. That was extremely helpful. Glad to know I’m not alone!
-
I guess I’m asking if there is something I’m not thinking of… Did I not warm up the poor enough? Or did I not clean the pole enough, or too much? Or do you think maybe I really don’t have enough space. (I’ve heard beginners need more space) though I try and time things out in the directions where I do have space.
Any other ideas?

Ah, I’m so jealous. I’d love to go. I’m from NJ so it’s not far.
BUT…It’s 4th of July weekend and my mom’s birthday. Also, I’m very new to pole at the moment, and I’m not sure I’d be able to keep up.
BUT (again)… If, closer to the day, I can wiggle out of familial obligations and have progressed in my poling I will let you know!
Oh, and I’m weirdly obsessed with Rhode Island license plates. 🙂

My take on it is there really isn’t a “right” way. What Veena is saying (I think) is that she has her pole climb as more of an exercise for beginners to develop upper body strength.
Sometimes pole crunches and all the work with resistance bands gets dull… So using the pole, and pulling into a climb like Veena teaches can really get those muscles burning in a challenging but fun way…
It’s positioned where it is in the lessons to build arm and grip strength. The other method uses more leg strength.
I guess the bottom line is… Eventually you’re going to need both upper and lower body strength… So climb both ways and do exercises that strengthen both. And when you’re strong enough that doing both is a breeze.., then climb the way you like!
Now, having said all that… I’m still working on my strength. I’m just a novice to pole myself. But conceptually that’s what makes sense to me. Correct me if I’m wrong. 🙂

Obviously listen to everything Veena said. She is right about building strength first.
For me…I found this video really helpful:
