I’m also a 9.5, and I actually order a 10. I’ve tried on both 9s and 10s and I felt like the plastic straps were the same size, but the footbed was bigger on the 10, with the 9s my toes were too close to the edge and it made floorwork difficult.
I hope that helps.. but I probably just confused you more 🙂

AH, the terminology is getting me! In class we never handspring by walking past the pole. Hm. I should try that. I knew I saw it somewhere, must have been here. We usually just start in a split grip type position and pop up, like in this (very old) video https://www.instagram.com/p/9zOinejLCq/
We call most of those moves just handspring variations. So What I did we just called “another way to handspring”

In yoga they recommend sitting on the edge of a folded blanket or a yoga wedge like so…
http://www.huggermugger.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/paschi-carla.jpgThis tips the pelvis forward and allows you to fold forward without rounding. 🙂 It really helps me to feel the stretch in the correct places. You just need to make sure you are sitting on the edge of the blanket, not just sitting flat or it won’t help with the tilt.

The ones sponsored by lupit (like uspdf) or platinum stages both use stainless (I’m pretty sure neither has a chrome option) I’m not sure if xpole uses chrome or stainless in their competition poles… however many people are allergic to chrome, so it’s possible that they use stainless as well 🙂
I agree though, warming yourself and the pole is key. And you might need to play around with different grip aids for different seasons. Also using a glycerin based lotion before bed keeps your skin from drying out too much but isn’t greasy.

MemberNovember 27, 2016 at 3:14 pm in reply to: Best pole finish for cold-natured, dry-skinned beginner?Your heading describes me as well. I love love love the stainless at the studio… but those are platinum stages poles. I’m not sure but I’ve heard through the grapevine that the xpole stainless is very very slippery.
My first pole didn’t spin and it was a chrome xpole. When I upgraded to a spin pole I picked titanium gold. I like it a lot more than chrome, but not as much as the studio poles. It seems to warm up so much faster than the chrome. And it stays warm if I take a 5 minute break (my chrome didn’t hold heat well at all).
Brass is always an option but personally I find that it pulls on my skin way too much. It hurts!!! When I was used to them (because that’s all my studio used to have) I got used to it. But now that they put some stainless poles up it’s hard for me to go back to the brass.
It’s hard to find the perfect finish. But I have to say a lot of it has to do with warming the pole up.
I got the xpole pole warmer and I put it on 20min or so before I pole and that really helps.

WHEW! I feel so much better now.
The owner reached out to me and invited me to the show! It was great (and i’m so happy i got to enjoy it)
And right now everything is great, I’m just feeling a little lost… but more on that in a bit (I think I’m going to write a blog post on it)

I also agree that if you need DVDs – fit & bendy is more my speed 🙂
-
Obviously I’ll echo what everyone said about this site. Veena is a great instructor.
But I’ll also give my opinion about Cleo’s DVD (I’ve only done Legs N Abs)…
I liked it, I’d consider doing it again…. but parts of it were too aerobic for me. Not that I physically couldn’t do it, but I didn’t want to 😛Personal preference. I really like calm, yoga-ish, flowy, peaceful, meditative, stretching.
After Cleo’s DVD (even just doing the beginner/Intermediate schedule) I’d be sweaty, gross and exhausted. I do think that kind of activity builds up active flexibility but I just wish it was calmer and not as “Rockin” 😛

Oh I posted it in there but it didn’t hyperlink…. Let me try again!

Thanks for the love and support guys. It really warms my heart. Thanks for taking the time out to respond and lift me up. I can’t even express what it means to me.
I feel really good about my decision… and about taking a little break.
I do feel bad if I let down the owner of the pole studio. We were actually getting to be pretty friendly… and I feel really awkward now, she only really responded saying “I guess you have to do what you have to do” so…. I feel like she is annoyed over it. But I guess we will see how she feels later (and how I feel). I think the stress of putting on a showcase is probably heavy on her mind… and things get lost via text.
I’m really excited to back up a bit and find some love for pole again. Not really sure what that looks like. But I’m looking forward to find out.

I’m not blaming anyone but myself. But I hope no one holds it against me 😕
-
Well I dropped out. I have performed before. But this was different. It’s a week out and I was physically ill, and balling my eyes out. There is a lot more too it. And maybe it’s just complicated with the stuff I feel like I’m dealing with personally. I think I may have really upset the studio owner, as she hasn’t written me back. Which really hurts me. But I’ve spent hundreds upon hundreds at her studio and it’s not like she turned people away from performing and I took a spot from someone else. I didn’t. So I hope she doesn’t hold it against me.
I guess at this point I just need a break. Mentally and physically. If it was just one night I could maybe push past.but 3 nights seems insurmountable at this point.
I spent the weekend in bed instead I’d with my family. It shouldn’t be like that. I’m never going to be Michelle shimmy, this isn’t my livelihood. This is supposed to be fun. Not make me hate pole and myself.
-
Thank you. 💕
I want to quit 😢I’ve been in a bad place all day. I know there is something to be said about fighting through it. But isn’t this supposed to be fun?
-
Yeah, they are a little bulky, but I don’t feel like the MG ones are padded enough for my boney knees 🙈
I ended up with the ones I have because Michelle shimmy wears them and I’m kind of a fan girl 😛
That being said, I haven’t really poled in them. Just floor stuff 🙂

MemberOctober 26, 2016 at 8:31 pm in reply to: which is better private pole lessons or pole class in studioI would give both a try. There are valuable things to be taken from both. But trying out both and seeing where you feel comfortable would be great.
I personally had a really got experience with private lessons at an instructors house. But I’ve hear horror stories… bad technique, or really unprofessional instructors. I have a friend who said she’d pay for a hour and the woman would be on the phone, or yelling at her kids. Going to someone’s house can be hit or miss.
Same with studios. I’ve been to a few, and I’m comfortable at the one I’m at. And I feel like a little more likely to push myself in a class then just with a single instructor.

Ya know what?! My last patient today said I didn’t introduce myself before I sat down and started talking to her, she told the front desk lady that I was “very rude” even though I walked in the room and said hello and asked how she was feeling today…. and she snubbed me so I just was quiet and did my exam without chit chatting…. Then the receptionist told me she complained when she left.
Well I cried the whole way home from work and I’m still upset. It sucks, but you really can’t please everyone. Sometimes you just need to shake it off. Easier said then done. :/
-
This really bothers me. I’ve seen it all over FB today too. Aside from the content… That’s a STOLEN picture of Marlo, at Body and Pole. As someone who does attend classes there from time to time I do take it personally…. 😡😡😡
-
Ugh!!!! That’s so horrible! I can’t state that enough… Hugs.
Ok so I usually go to a mixed level class…. And my teacher always says something quick about “call me if you need a spot” and often times I do. I’ll wait for her if she is with someone else rather than do something I’m not comfortable doing on my own. It kind of seems like common sense that someone would call you over and actually ask for a spot if they needed one, but sometimes people need you to say it. 🙂
I also think no one should think that they are “above” the basics. And it’s crazy rude to leave.
Usually my mixed level classes do some kind of progressions or level differences. Like superman from the ground, superman from just hooking your knee at hip height and dropping into jasmine, then doing the hip flip, or for the inverters…. Gemini to superman… And for those well above that working on a new transition in or out of it.
I’m sorry again. It’s so hard not to take things personally. I just keep feeling like these girls sound really cliquey and mean-girl ish.
I think every new job comes with a lot of insecurities and doubts. Don’t let it discourage you!!!
-
Love that picture… or something that shows off your flexibility. I love some of your crazy beautiful split shots!
-
Are you inverting primarily on one side?
