  • Is it slick hands or do I need to improve my grip?

Posted by PA-CPOLE on June 19, 2010 at 11:45 pm

Oh I can grip with my legs like no other but if I have to grip with just my hands I fall right down the pole. IE Climbing the pole is hard, I can’t do inverts after climbing because as soon as it is just my hands I slip down, doing the inverted V is impossible because I slip. I have tried mighty grip but it does not seem to help so is it me? If it is me, any advice on how to improve my grip?
    Thanks!!

I too have the same issue. Mighty grip, can make the grip better, but my hands still get a bit sweaty so the pole is slippery. Half way through a spin, ill all of a sudden get slippery and slide really fast in a spin.

I have heard dry hands will make this better, so im getting some next week. Ill post back when i try it.
In the mean time, i have to wipe the pole and hands between every use. I also wipe vodka on my hands to help dry them out, that works really well, but my hands still start to sweat again after a couple of moves.

I used to have a similar issue! I would have to wipe my hands on my shorts before i did every move. My instructor told me that this was probably because when you start to do a move that your body knows is difficult it starts to sweat, hence why your hands are worse when you’re trying something new! If this is true then in theory as you get more confident it shouldn’t be as bad. My hands are a little better now but I don’t know whether that’s because I’m more confident or because I started working at a zoo and my hands are now forever dry and gross o_O Do you find the same issue in spins and things?

    Hi Girls,

When I first started learning pole I had incredibly slippery hands and needed to wipe my pole between every single move. And yes your instructor was right, when you are learning a new move your hands sweat more too. Over time your hands will sweat less and you will also develop a much stronger grip which helps compensate for when your hands sweat a little. ‘Dry Hands’ helps a lot too. So much of pole dancing involves being patient until your body becomes stronger so just give it some time because you will be fine in the end.

I have been pole dancing for 3 yrs now, and i am quite confident with many moves, yet my palms are still super sweaty most of the time. My hands sweat even when I am not pole dancing tho. I think it depends on the person. I sweat more than others. I have to use Dry Hands or Tite Grip, to help me stay on the pole for longer than a minute without slipping off.
