alethea austin has a great foot stretch in her 'stretching for pole' dvd if you access to that.

AerialGypsy -
Things to consider:

How long have you had this chrome pole? It takes a while to break them in. Studio poles get heavy use so they tend to be grippier.

Are you warming the pole up enough and you body, before trying moves? A warm pole and warm body = better grip.

Stainless might be easier for you to grip than chrome. Some people are that way and others are the reverse.

If you absolutely cannot grip, try some dew point. That's what I do on those horrid grip days.

I get into position and then let the front of my calves slowly slide off the pole until they are totally off the pole. Like someone else suggested, you could try split grip from extended butterfly. In this position, you need to make no adjustments to your body like in EG caterpillar, you simply have to be able to balance yourself.

SmilingFox -
I have had the same problem. It has taken a while, 1-2 months, to get used to my chrome xpole. I have to get that baby warmed up well before I can start really sticking to it. It is really frustrating, but I have taken a different view on it lately. I keep thinking that if I can learn on a slippery pole, then I will really be able to stick the moves at the studio. I have found that at my studio, the slippery poles aren't nearly as bad as what the others at my beginner level think they are, since mine is epically slippery :-) When I absolutely need grip, I use Dry Hands, because I do tend to sweat a lot. The alcohol does do a number on my skin though, so my hands are quite ugly and the skin is very dry. I still have to clean the pole a lot with alcohol, and wash my hand often, if not wearing Dry Hands.

Try not to get discouraged. You are not alone in that fight with a slippery chrome xpole:-)

pegasusaerialfitness -
If you are at your max.. And can't talk...that is not something you probably will not be able to maintain cardio wise. There are many, many good theories out there about what is the best way to do cardio...in my personal opinion I think mixing it is best....somedays low and slow, and others days I feel need and desire to do more interval training. We could talk about the Kreisler cycle and all that..but I think the real point is to somehow....get the heart rate..it doesn't Really matter if you break it up into 10 minute bouts or keeping it at 40 minutes....(whatever)

vacumming the house can be cardio too..

The only time I think you have to get super duper critical about what type or how long or when to do it is if you have a medical issue that warrants monitoring your heart rate..or you are an extreme athlete that warrants it in a training technique. Just move, sweat, (if your a sweater) listen to your body...if your miserable slow down...if your spunky speed up.. For me I need 40 minutes of cardio every other day..I do that for my " head" or else I would be a farret Icage

Positive Vs. Negative Encouragement

poledanceromance - My thoughts are similar. I believe positive feedback and guidance are both important, and kind delivery comes from knowing and recognizing the stages of learning. If we were just working on a skill and you got the technique, I stop and acknowledge what you did well at that stage before moving into the next stage of learning where we're doing aesthetic corrections. I think it's important to try to thoughtfully articulate what was done properly, not to inflate the ego but because I find students are guaranteed to learn pole skills faster if they can recognize and focus on what "felt right" rather than focusing on (and potentially even developing muscle memory for) something incorrect.

But always recognize what was done correct first, to get the student to recognize what the correct execution feels like so they can duplicate it. Now, what TONE that positive reinforcement has depends on each student. Some benefit from a more gentle and praising tone because they're just there to feel good and have a good time. Some students are really working hard to crack a skill and do well with a very matter-of-fact breakdown of their attempts. Sometimes a student does well with either or both, depending on what they're working on (flows vs. skills, what focus a class/teacher has could influence this I think). This is just what I've observed as a teacher and as a student over the years, my two cents!

JelliCrew -
When I get down from dancing on the pole, back and fourth from static and spinning, or even just up and down the pole doing normal stuff, immediately after it hard to carry a normal conversation, for me. I am breathing between every word... But it was my understanding that you have to keep your heart rate up, below the maximum for a period of time, say at least 30 minutes or so, as opposed to anaerobic activity which means without oxygen, and you go super hard, meet your vo2 max, and can't carry a conversation after, bc your huffing and puffing. I find I am somewhere between, bc I am breathing or else I would pass out, but I can't dance it out for a straight 30+ min. This has kind of confused me...but I'd say if I don't let my body cool and I keep working on stuff, then I feel like I am getting a cardio workout. I've seen on YouTube where people do like pole aerobics... But I don't see how I would enjoy that every much...it reminds me like pole step aerobics...maybe I would like it, and just haven't tried it.

I also prefer getting into it from a Gemini and then reach up. My instructor had me go into a kind of frog leg position to help get my body away from the pole enough to push out my hips. She also told me to make sure my hooked leg formed the number "7". It's not pretty, but it gave me the the chance to see how it feels. Here is a link to my vid. I let go too soon, but at least I was able to get my hips forward enough to start working on perfecting it!

polergirl -
Definitely better. You're still arching your back--quite a bit to my eye. Tucking your pelvis under and flattening your back will help a lot as far as your balance. And Mary Ellen is right about keeping your hip further from the pole than your shoulders. I commented in the butterfly thread about having strong triangles, and aysha is 100% a move that requires triangles in order to feel secure.

I will say that I often do a EG aysha with my elbow straight across from my shoulder but that's to allow my torso and hips to angle wayyyyyyyy out for a more dramatic line.

Mary Ellyn -
Better!

Look at your profile in the video...your hips are not further from the pole than your shoulders. You need to get a better angle so that your hips are pulling your body away from your elbow grip.

Your lower hand is too low, too far away from you. Your upper arm needs to grip with the elbow higher, closer to your knees. the elbow should not be straight across from your shoulder but up above and higher.

Take it slow as you back away.

PrincessPeach - I think you have to adapt your approach depending on the person. I'm personally a big fan of receiving "Great momentum but point those damn toes" or "You looked hot but that's not what I'd call a brass monkey/butterfly".

You have to remember not everybody has the same goals. If you're getting rough and critical over poise and its low on the persons agenda they might feel you're nit picking rather than being helpful.

I think those looking for feedback need to give an indication of what kind/area they're looking for it on. It's very hard to get it right and even the gobbiest of people might tone it down rather than risking hurting somebody's feelings.

flygrlsim -
no worries, i had the same problem. can definitely be frustrating! ive tried a variety of different solutions, but i think the first question is why is it slippery? is the pole and/or your body cold? that can cause it to be slippery. if you warm up your body and as a result, the pole, that will help. second, do your hands tend to be dry or sweaty? there are SO many wonderful grip aides out there. "dry hands" is probably the most common (if you tend to run sweaty). if your hands are dry like mine, try "heel to toe peppermint foot sloughing lotion" (can find at sally beuaty supply, or amazon). i know, seems weird, but it has some sort of solution in it thats very "tacky" and I LOVE IT! i use it on my hands and all over my body. i use it at home as well as at the studio. Also, i find that rubbing alcohol exacerbates my dry skin. several people have suggested using white distilled vinegar which i dab onto a towel and rub on to my home pole w(not the studio pole because its stinky!). that helps too. again, it gives a certain amount of "tackiness" to the pole. see if any of this helps!!! i hop it does! it can be frustrating, but it just takes some patience and lots of trial and error to determine what works best for your body. : )

DancePantsPrincess - Hey guys! I am having a slippery pole issue. Lol. The studio I go to has stainless steel x-poles and I have no problem holding on, somewhat climbing, and can do a pole sit. Then I get home to my chrome x-pole and can't do any of that! I can't even attempt a sit because I just keep sliding down when trying to grip with my hands. It is extremely discouraging. Instructor told me its just because I need experience and strength, but then why can I do it there on first try? I have tried cleaning it with both windex and rubbing alcohol. I stopped using had lotion a few days ago and it seems like it has gotten worse. What is the best dry hand stuff to get? Any tips? I can't even get on it right after cleaning it. HELP!

Pankake -
I would proceed with caution if I were you. I am a trusting person as well but this sends up my red flags. My first thought would be, who knows what they would do with your video once they had it? Sell it, publish it, take credit for it? What other information would they ask you to submit?

Did a tiny bit of internet digging - the Facebook page for Dancever has only existed since December 2012 and says it's based in the UK. The domain name was purchased from GoDaddy.com through a company called DomainByProxy out of Scottsdale, AZ, which seems to pride itself on keeping the domain owner's identity secret. There are SO many easy one-step ways to buy a legit domain (hell, just go to GoDaddy and buy it!), I find it hard to believe any casual first-time website maker (judging by the quality of the site itself) would take the extra step to hide their identity unless there was a reason.

Something seems rotten here. I'd think you can safely ignore the FB message.

I'm just unsure of what she's asking and why I would be interested, but like I said, we have a language barrier. So if anyone has info please share! :) Thanks!

I am stuck in a house with super low ceilings and even the garage is below 7' so I am stuck with pole dancing outside and need a stand alone pole. Unfortunately, ordering a new one directly from PS or X-Pole is around $1000 after shipping etc. and that is quite a but of money. Does anyone out there have a 45 mm stand alone that they are willing to sell? I would prefer X-Stage or PS Star Stand Alone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3AOwS90EUE

My form isn't completely perfect here to show you what I mean.I'm still a little upright b/c I'm about to go into the russian split(well I'm working on it lol). I'll make you a tutorial vid later. Push into the pole w/ your bottom foot. Try a lil grip aid if you want on the bottom of your foot the first couple of times to feel comfy in the move. In the vid above I used couch cushions for support in case I fell(I'm fine in the cupid, but not for the russian split lol). My hips slide up just a tad and that's my perfect spot. If they slide too far up, than you'll slide down. Hope that helps:)

Just keep up the with the circuit and it can be cardio. They have these things called air ropes too. They r pretend jump ropes.. Adding some intervals of the will help keep your heart rate up too. I also like mini tramps, glider discs, and Bosu's...these r more low impact.

sailor -
Hello ladies!

I've been absent for quite a while, 9 weeks ago today I sprained my ankle (not pole related) and it's finally feeling well enough to exercise on (though I can tell it's not 100% better yet).

So first some back story. In 2005 I had abdominal surgery twice in two months for a uterine fibroid. I have a scar from my belly button to my hair line.
I've done the pole strength lesson a few times this week, and today noticed that the scar area really hurts when I press against the pole (like in a pole hold).

I'm wondering if anyone else here has ever had a similar problem... or maybe there is some way I can stop pressing in to the pole so hard? I don't mean to, lol... maybe it will just improve as I get stronger?

She breaks moves down ,gives conditioning advice, and shows transitions as well. If you get just one set it should be those.

Dont forget about Veena's lessons too--they're a GREAT resource, super well done, and you can stream them--no waiting for shipping or any of that. Yay!

Those who will cheer for you and tell you that you're amazing and awesome and special no matter what. And those who will be brutally honest with you and tell you no, that sucked and here's what you can do to change that.

I think we need honest good mannered critique to improve ..However I dislike the constant Point your goddamn feet comments I see frequently in many YouTube videos .:-)

Runemist34 -
*Shrug* Honestly, I think everyone thrives in different environments. I prefer positive reinforcement and carefully thought out (and carefully given) criticism, because I have an unfortunate self-esteem and anxiety issue. I'm working on this.

However, for another person, they might interpret the applause as false, or they may not need it- if they know they're doing well and can admit that to themselves, I think that they no longer need it from other people that much. Strong criticism may also be more helpful to them, and if they're really trying to push themselves, they may interpret that as a kind of encouragement from another person.

Sadism (the "sado" part of sado-masochism), for the record, means deriving pleasure from inflicting pain on other people. Masochism means that you enjoy the pain inflicted from ther people. Usually it refers to physical pain, but it can sometimes be emotional or social. Some people's pain is also their pleasure ;)

You need the triangle created by the bottom hand through your shoulder to your hip, then from hip to leg on pole. That will help balance the weight distribution of your butterfly and hopefully help those hands feel more secure. Good luck! Butterfly's a pretty move! :)

It takes a long time to build strength to do the "big" things like climbing and inverting. Some people a yr some a month. You have to listen to your own body. I danced w/ pole for 4 yrs before I even found a studio!!! I didn't even know there were people out there better than me lol. I thought I invented tons of moves like the figure 4 layback and a back hook spin lol! Ha- the most fun I have is just dancing. When things become too controlled, too structured a lot of fun is lost. Just forget about the lessons for a little bit and "connect with your pole". Pretend it's your dancing partner and your outlet and just be free! This may not mean one single trick but will be just as powerful and beneficial! xxxx

Charley -
When I get down, I ask myself "why did I begin this journey?" Was it to be the best pole dancer on the planet? For others approval? To show off flashy tricks? No. I kept poling day in and day out because it made me feel good, strong, powerful and sexy. I got trick addicted because I found an online community and started comparing myself to others in a time in my life where my femininity was bruised and battered. My self esteem was incredibly low and for a minute pole made it lower. Then came a moment when I realized that I pole for me, it's ok if I'm not strong and coordinated, if I beat ,us elf up Imwill never get to whee I want to go. I started letting go and opening my mind, heart and body to learning movement and it felt good. I rarely learn new tricks, I rarely use tricks in my dance and I love pole more today than ever. It was a long journey, but an amazing one. I've used my lack of strength to create versions and variations for myself, some have been great others not so great but now for pole is a creative outlet.

Mynadvice is ask yourself why you started, what really drew you in, and write it down place in your pole room and never forget that :)

Mary Ellyn -
First the Midwest convention and competitions have a new title sponsor this year...Lovers Lane!!!

Online video application is now open and the final deadline for submissions is 11:59pm CST on June 15th. This is an absolute deadline...even one minute late and we must decline the application.

Tips for applying:
Online valuation will be as follows:

1. Artistry – 10 points
creativity, aesthetically pleasing, expressive, imaginative

2. Execution & skill – 15 points
level of difficulty, variety of moves at all levels, variety of floor work, tricks, spins and transitions, musicality etc

3. Form & fluidity – 15 points
point, extension, alignment, musicality, control, fluidity of moves and transitions, etc

4. Presentation – 10 points
music choice, costume, attitude, style, visual personality

Note that Execution & Skill and Form & Fluidity are weighted more than artistry and presentation for the online round. While more advanced skills are important, especially for the elite divisions, polish and form are the most important criteria. We would prefer to see clean lines than sloppy or have way there moves. Judges will not be impressed with an "almost" iron x but more impressed with clean lines, solid strength and beautiful form as well as someone who chooses their moves wisely knowing their abilities...not trying to show what they can "almost" do.

Feel free to ask any questions you like here or private mesage me or email me at Info@MidwestPoleDancing.com. I am happy to answer all questions as I am not a judge and do not make the final decisions.

StudioVeena -
Have you tried different entries into the Butterfly and are you using a split grip or forearm/elbow grip?

Split grip http://www.studioveena.com/galleries/view/4f883329-2194-4c9d-a6cf-264f0ac37250

Basic butterfly forearm http://www.studioveena.com/galleries/view/4f8832df-6a9c-4173-915a-250c0ac37250

I would suggest trying either grip and using a caterpillar entry. The Basic butterfly will give you more security when first working on this move, you enter from caterpillar, so you could try working on that first. I'm guessing you're using a Gemini entry right now? If you use a caterpillar entry the hands will already be in place before you move the legs. It's good to try both entries though.

Here are the lessons if you're interested.

Any tips for dry legs?

Mary Ellyn -
Exfoliate your legs in the bath/shower.

Love Pole Physics too but Cera Ve basic lotion (not advanced or extra, etc) has almost the same ingredients as Pole Physics and is much cheaper.

Prior to pole I also suggest Dew point, corn huskers and aloe vera gel. See which ones work best for you but a lot of people with super dry skin like the Dew point.

Remember your skins needs can change with climate/weather and the type of pole you are using and your own chemistry.

When you reverse climb, get your hips as high as you can and your elbow should be pointing upward so that your elbow is higher than your wrist and close to your knees.

And you know what - I'm kinda proud of it :) I never dance as such at classes, and doing head flicks makes me cringe because I feel so awkward, but it turns out when I am alone and just feel the music my hair gets very involved! I wanted to practice dancing to a whole song to prepare for the competition I'm doing next month. So here it is, my first full freestyle. It's far from perfect, a few shaky bits/mistakes and I still need to work on developing my own dance style and not getting awkward and self-conscious. But I hope you enjoy it and I'd love some feedback :)

Also - I would get it solid on static first before doing it on spin. At least for me, I feel unstable when working on a trick on spin. Also, I too struggle with elbow grip - have you tried forearm or natural or twisted grip? It's strange - I have a super strong twisted grip Ayesha but the elbow grip is so hard for me :-P.

For me it was fear, once I got past the fear of doing it (which took several months mind you), it became my fave move :) Give it time, some moves will take longer than others to gain the strength & confidence to execute. Just keep practicing :)

Ly Kieu Le - 10 months ago when I started, it took me 2 months to climb the pole. You nailed it down in 2 weeks that was super fast. In the video you look very fit, just a bit of practice, patience and commitment, I guarantee you'll dance like a pro in a couple of years. Veena's site is great to learn tricks, stretching and conditioning, but if you want to learn transitions between the tricks, how to connect them and all the sexy dance moves and floorwork, I recommend www.premierpoleonline.com. Wish I had known this site sooner cuz I was bored out of my mind practicing pole at the beginner's level before lol
Hang in there and keep up the good work. Your body has a memory and the muscles are smart. The more you do a move, the faster your body will figure out itself how to do it best. I thought I would need more body strength so I rock climbed and went to the gym to build more strength to be able to do tricks better. But no, there's only one way to it: Keep on doing it :D

Positive Vs. Negative Encouragement

corbyOconnor -
For me, I like to be complimented if something I do truly is awesome. I don't like to be fawned over, I don't like to be told something is good when it isn't, and I don't appreciate when I feel like people are only saying something to cheer me up instead of their comments reflecting reality. I can't take it seriously if I don't feel the compliment is genuine or I haven't deserved it.

That said, based on some recent dance class experience, I would say that working hard to gain the approval of a difficult, nit-picking teacher is a huge rush for me. I want to know I earned it, and once I have, I know that its just one step of many ahead. It doesn't end there. I am not perfect, but I am working for it.

One thing I have noticed... people with classical dance training seem to be some of the most honest and brutally straightforward teachers. But I know a lot of people who don't want that honesty, who feel it's too negative, and take it personally when the teacher never meant it personally. I think it's seen as negative criticism, when it's not meant that way. It's not a take down, but an honest reaction from a teacher about what a dancer is doing, relative to what they should be doing in a technical sense. It's not personal if you didn't point your toe that time, it's technical. But I know the delivery method sometimes can feel harsh if a person is not used to it.

I think we all dance for different reasons, and often those reason dictate our preferred approach.

That is actually my favorite pole out of the choices of Xpole, PS, and LM. The spin option is fantastic! I, too, would probably remove the adjuster cover. I don't like that the pole adjusts from the bottom and has that cover. But to each their own! Plus I think it can be converted to adjusting at the top anyways.

Ly Kieu Le - Last March I travelled outside the US for a month so had to carry the pole with me. I wrapped all the tubes in bubble wraps and put them all in a box within the dimension limit and checked the box, then I brought the dome as a carry-on on the plane and went through security just fine. Make sure you'll give yourself enough time cuz the security people will ask you questions about the dome as many don't know what it is. Good luck!

Serzi - Had an interesting discussion w/ a friend I now believe may be a sado-masochist. Why? Well, she prefers insults and severe criticism to fuel her pole journey rather than compliments or supportiveness.

Umm, I'm not going to comment much on my personal opinion of this for once but you can bet I don't much care for the idea. I get that some people feel it pushes them more than everlasting kindness but, idk, I used to have an eating disorder and negative reinforcement was a huge part of my routine. Found it rather damaging to the psyche.

Anyway, what are your opinions on this? :)

We did have some water damage that went thru the ceiling so perhaps we have some rotting...didn't want to take that chance again so I went with the free standing pole. This is the 3.0 with ez connect. My daughter and I can't wait. Will post pics and reviews. Thanks to those who own this model who gave me their honest opinions, it was very helpful. Updates coming... :)

But, here is me practicing and playing around on my pole. I did a (probably pretty improper) POLE SIT for the FIRST time!!! I have been poling for two weeks :). Sorry, I don't know how to edit yet, and don't mind all of the toys! haha

cardio in and of itself really isnt necessary at all, and no one said cardio had to be running. Any activity that gets you moving and gets your heart rate up is cardio!

If I'm doing strength training like squats, plank slides (for the abs), and other calisthenics type activities for strength training, and my heart rate gets up in my target zone, does it count as cardio too? I know that you are supposed to cardio train 3-5 days per week; I frigging hate running, and I don't have room anywhere to hoop, so I'm hoping my strength training counts, as I am heaving like a little wimp.

But, im not sure of what show it is, but if i had this opportunity i would approach simply stick to althletic sneakers or bare feet and yoga pants. leave the lingerie at home, though pole dancing has a sexy side, i believe theres a time and a place for such things, and lastly, stay away from the reoccuring pole dancers vs strippers debate. we pole dancers know the amount of athleticism that is involved. but its not worth accidently offending the erotic dancers within the pole dance community we know we are all equal as athletes but its exhausting to try and defend everyone, so just avoid it all together if it comes down to it

Linuxgirl -
Day 12 here.. Wow, I didn't take Veena's advice and do Rejuvenation days at first now, sometimes I do two rejuvenation days. I found a good rest period allows me to have an awesome pole day, I got my very first cross knee release ever after a 48 hour break.

There are days I just freestyle and enjoy myself and then there are days I work out with Veena doing her strength training, other days I do Aletha Austin's stretching for pole, I mix it up, I'm not worried about the 30 days, I'm in no hurry, I do not want to get permanently injured.

My Internet research made me realize we aren't training much different than body builders, I added glucosamine, Omegas, Multi-vitamin and an extra iron supplement to my daily morning ritual on top on Advil and I drink a protein shake after poling.

don't forget to feed those muscles :)

No matter how many rest days, my body is still telling me and letting me know I'm working out, there are days I'm stiff and the michigan weather doesn't help much.

You can type in an artist and then they also play stuff like that from different artists, it's way better than pandora.

X-pole sport or expert?

Make sure, you are buying from a licensed x-pole retailer. I went with the expert, I love spinning mode, I make myself put it on static for training. Everything is harder to do on static in my opinion.

ShonaLancs - I don't mean caterpillar Organic I mean the triangle move first which enables you to get your balance (sorry I wasn't clear). That's how I was taught to Ayesha. That will stop you from going into it super quick like you do in the video :-)

ShonaLancs - Have you tried going right back to basics with this move? As in doing all the prep moves first. So caterpillar, triangle then bring legs into Ayesha? I know you have been poling for a long time so if you have always had trouble with the Ayesha you have got into a pattern of a troubled Ayesha so your muscle memory will be working it that way. If you stopped going into it as though its a move you can do and take it right back to basics it might retrain your muscles the right way rather than the way they are now which means you're not getting it.
Does that make sense?
I haven't been poling anywhere near as long and I am not a teacher but taking it back to basics works for me. I just treat the move like it is new and eventually it comes good :-)

calipolepixie -
@studiovenna first off, I want to thank you for being so open to the idea of a mentor/mentee match up, as I think it will be really helpful and enriching to alot of gals here. Second, I want to clarify something...I hope you don't think that this idea came about because I think SV is not a great support system because it is! In fact, the love and support I have received from the SV community is the reason I stuck with pole and didn't quit a few times!

I do want to share how this idea came about though :) I was thinking back to when I first started college and how lonely, confusing, frustrating and hard that first year was. Then I thought back to my first year of poling and realized I had the same emotions and feelings as I did in my first year in college. Sure, I had support from my friends and family but I was still ready to drop out of college in my sophmore year because I just felt so lost stumbling though classes day after to day--I felt like a hamster running in a hamster wheel moving through life but really going anywhere.

Then one of my favorite professors suggested that I get a mentor. Best suggestion ever because I honestly don't think I wouldn't have made it through college without my mentors extra guidance, support, advice and sympathetic listening ear.

And then the lightbulb went off of how great it would be to bring that wonderful 1 on 1 connection and (extra) support to newbie SV members...and there you have it :)
